Drew tapped his pencil on the floor and wished, for probably the fiftieth time, that he'd been smart enough to buy furniture before moving in. Sitting and sketching on the floor had been all well in good in college and grad school, but it was a little embarrassing now that he was a grown man with an actual business to run.  But Drew had his papers spread out all around him and a coffee cup just past his right hand, and more work than he knew what to do with. So he figured not having a couch wasn't all half bad.  At least the bed had arrived last week, so he wasn't sleeping on the floor anymore.

He'd been working on the Witmann plans for an hour and he knew he should keep going. The Witmanns were a very old family with a few very hefty bank accounts, and Mrs. Whitman, who was eighty at the youngest, kept hiring Drew because, in her words, "you look so much like my Charlie."  Since Charlie was her beloved brother who'd died somewhere in a forest in Belgium during World War Two, Drew made it a point to indulge her. Besides, she always paid him very well for his time, even if her projects were a little boring.

And there was the problem. He couldn't keep his mind on Mrs. Witmann's gardening structure (which could loosely be called a small house) because he had something in front of him that wasn't boring at all.  Something he was actually excited about drawing and sketching and presenting to the client. And then, showing up and making himself a nuisance on the job site when construction began, because he desperately wanted to see the designs in his head as they took shape in wood and drywall and molding.

He tapped his pencil on the floor again, took a sip of coffee, and grimaced.  It was cold.

"You don't have the job yet," he reminded himself sternly as he shoved the plans for the old historic building behind the garden house. And then startled so badly that he almost tipped over the coffee when the phone rang in the silence of his apartment.
