My right arm is slightly more tan than my left. My right side is a little more twitchy than my left. And my right arm is definitely more sore than my left. In case it wasn't obvious, yes, I was sitting on the right side of the boat. :P
I had a great time yesterday. My friend A, her roommate M, and I went to Harpers Ferry, WV and rowed about 8 miles down the Shenandoah River, drifting past the juncture where we could see three states: WV, VA, and MD. The scenery was beautiful, with the mountains, the old railroad tracks, and Harpers Ferry itself, and the weather couldn't have been more well-suited to such an outing. Perhaps the only thing we could've done without was the other couple who shared our boat; the female half, specifically. Two minutes in and she was already whining about being tired. We knew then we'd be carrying her weight for the rest of the 2.5 hours . . . we were right.
But everything else was perfect. It hasn't rained much lately, so the water was low, calm, and easy. The stretch of the river we went down was also pretty tame, so not the least bit frightening. I think the only thing I really worried about before the trip was losing my glasses, as these are my only pair, but they were fine. I did manage to fall out of my seat once, but I fell forward into the boat and my glasses never came close to slipping off.
The other thing I learned yesterday was, sitting on sand and then being bumped and jostled for an hour is not fun at all. I was fine until we took a lemonade break. When we got back on the boat, everything was sandy, and I swear I could feel each granule through my clothes. By the end of the ride my butt was well-exfoliated. ;P
As for my guide . . . well, before my trip,
happychemist wished me a hot, Australian. She didn't, however, wish me a old-enough hot, Australian. So, out of all the hunky guides, we got the jail bait. :P Josh was very nice though. We wished that he had a little bit more experience and could've told us more about the places we were riding past, but as this is only his first season as a guide we didn't hold it against him.
After the trip, we were starved (had breakfast at 6 am, ate lunch at 2 pm). We ate at an adorable soup/sandwich shop in town where everything was fresh, organic, and cheap. Ah, rural living! On the way back, we stopped at several farm stands where I purchased corn and peaches. I had the corn for dinner last night - so sweet, so fresh - pure delight!
In conclusion, yesterday's outing was an A++.
