What strikes your fancy?

I confess, I spent so much time and energy thinking about and creating my last chapter that I actually haven't given my story much thought beyond it. I know, how bad is that? :P Rest assured, I know where my story is going. It's just the stuff in between, how it gets there, that's not so etched into stone.

Anyhow, I've started working on the next chapter and thinking beyond it, and I realized I haven't settled on a characterization for George Wu. I thought I was going to go in one direction and then I realized I could go in another, so now I have two options:

Option #1: I can model him after his namesake and find a way to make him so reprehensible that Elaine gets to say, "See Mom? Just because he's Chinese doesn't make him better. In fact, he's a jerk!" This seems the most obvious choice. But because it is, it also seems to be the easiest way to getting him out of the way. Is that really following in the Spirit of Jane, or is it a cop out? Which brings us to . . .

Option #2: I can go with my original thought, which is to create a likeable fellow. It may defy canon, but I've never considered myself a canonical author. After all, I've created a sensible Mrs. Bennet before too. And I can't help but also think that this option is the better choice because it allows us to truly see why Will is the best man for Elaine. I mean, it's kind of a no-brainer when one of your options is a sleaze bag.

And yet, while Option #2 seems the most palatable, I can't seem to shake myself of Option #1 either. I think it's because I realize I could be a little bit more canonical in my story by following Option #1. Right now, the only canon-like part of MB is the Billy/Charlotte relationship. But is being canonical really so important?

That's where I turn to you. I'm curious to know your thoughts. So vote! In my first poll ever! Let me know what your preferences are, and don't let mine influence yours. Like I said, I haven't reached a final decision and anything could happen. I just want to know what other people think. Though, I will disclaim and say that popular vote does not necessarily rule the day. I retain the right to do as I please. :)

In the meantime, I invite you to have your share in the conversation!
