Quarter of a Day

Dear Wagner, I would love to give one of your operas a try. I've heard so much about you. Mostly, scary things. But your opera? It is six hours long. *stare* That's almost an entire work day! That's riding the train to from Richmond to NYC! That's . . . a lot of hours! My butt would go numb trying to sit through your opera. So now I will ( Read more... )

That's just crazy talk! Have you read The Time Traveler's Wife? There are fans of Wagner in it, I'm afraid I don't know anyone personally who likes Wagner, takes a special person, I guess. ;)

I have read the book, but I don't remember the opera talk. But then I wasn't a fan when I read it. :)

I don't know anyone who likes Wagner either! H said she was talking to her boss's wife about opera and she (the wife) said Verdi was like marijuana for opera goers, it's a great way to get people hooked. But anyone who liked Wagner was on crack. Hee! (Or something like that. If H runs across this post later, she can correct me if I'm wrong. ;))

I love Wagner. Grew up on his stuff thanks to Dad. The opera I would climb Mt. Hood to see is Tannhäuser because of Pilgrims Chorus which always moves me to tears. However, the only other person who listens to Wagner besides myself that I know of is Inspector Morse. ;)

Heh. Why does it not surprise me that you would love Wagner, Jimmy?!

I do love his "Ride of the Walkyres" from Die Walkure, and I always find it a little ironic that his "Bridal Chorus" from Lohengrin has become a traditional wedding processional. From everything I've read about him, it just makes me giggle a little. :)

He was a scary windbag in some ways, eh? Also, he wrote something called "Songs on the Death of Children" (Kindertotenlieder), which is kinda creepy.

Hey, I might be coming to NYC! Sometime in the week of March 19-25. With my friend Jan. Currently scouting airfares and musing about hotels. What part of town should we stay in if we wanna shop and see shows (and get together with you if you can, too!)?

I'd heard that about Wagner operas - that they went on and on and on - but forgot about it until I was looking at the Met schedule and wondered, "Why does this one start at 6 p.m.?" Yikes. I've heard all sorts of creepy things about him. One of my friends got me this book, When the Fat Lady Sings, it's an irreverent telling of opera history and is hilarious. Its entry on Wagner is the best, and made me really curious to know what an opera of his would be like. But since I haven't the stamina, I guess I'll never know. :P

A trip to NYC! WAHOO! *fingers crossed* I should still be here then! Would be fabulous to meet up. But even if I'm not here, a trip to NYC is always fun. I recommend staying in Midtown. There are tons of hotels and it's just so central to everything (e.g., Times Square, which is where all the shows are, Fifth Avenue shopping, and easy access to other parts of Manhattan via subway). Feel free to email me if you have questions about hotel locations, etc.! I'm not all knowing, but I've gotten a lot better.
