Like a woman denied her Japanese bakery!

Everything went according to schedule, even left work ten minutes early because I finished my work. Get to the bakery and what do I find? A new sign. This one saying that the store was temporarily closed until further notice due to emergency construction ( Read more... )

Yes! They have ALL sorts of mochi (and other wagashi) goodness in their store. What they show online and what they have available for mail-order isn't nearly as diverse as what they actually carry in-store. For these sorts of things, you really do have to go to a real Japanese bakery. Sadly, DC is lacking in this area. It's mostly Chinese and Korean. That's why this would've been so special! Bah.

(The red bean on the outside was a real surprise treat. We'd never seen that before and it's good. The pound cake one my mom really likes. She didn't want to try the pumpkin one, but I had it after my parents left and it's fab! So I wanted to get some for her to try. Japanese pumpkin really is so much tastier than ours. Don't ask me why. They just are. It's a different variety, but samy family or something like that. Gah, I'm getting depressed again thinking about it . . . must stop. :P)

My mom didn't sound too upset at my dad so I'm not sure what the whole story is behind him throwing it out. But she may have just not been venting at that time. Heh. I'm sure I'll hear more about it over the weekend. She finally found one at Wal-Mart, I think, so she was able to spend the afternoon making it.
