Feeling very guilty that he was needed, and couldn't help because he'd stupidly injured his hands earlier, Jay stood by to one side. If he couldn't help, at least he could stay out of the way. Why did people always presume that Ebony was up to no good? There wasn't one amongst them who hadn't made some kind of mistake in their lives, did they want it held over their heads forever? Poor Ebony, she never had any female friends, and even her own sisters were often at odds with her. No wonder she was always so defensive. He wanted to comfort her, to stroke her arm, or take her hand, but his stupid hands were throbbing painfully, and slightly swollen from their earlier abuse.

There were so many people giving orders that Jay felt even more useless, but at the same time he was glad that there were other people who could handle matters when he was unable to do so. He watched Ebony's reaction to the whole scene, and her regret over what had happened was clearly evident to him. Why couldn't everyone else see it? The more that he saw of her care and concern the more convinced he became that it really had been an accident. She was nearly beside herself with worry, and when she started for the hospital he quickly followed. If only there were something that he could do to make her feel better...
