Glad that Ebony could read him so well that she knew not to start a discussion right now, Jay continued eating. It did make him feel a little better when Ebony placed her hand on his thigh. It was a sweet, quiet way to connect without the need for words. There was a gentle side to Ebony that not everyone got to see. Sure, she'd done a lot of things to make herself a place in the world, things that could be seen as devious. But somewhere underneath all of that Jay could see the frightened little girl who just wanted someone to love her and take care of her. He took a deep breath and relaxed a little, then took a big spoonful of stew with a chunk of potato. This stew was rather good, although this type of dish always made him miss having meat.
Suddenly Ebony's hand wasn't just comforting him any longer, and Jay gasped with shock. Some of the stew went down the wrong way and he started coughing and sputtering. How could she do that in a public room? Right at that moment Tai-San decided to join them, furthering Jay's discomfit that Ebony's hand was still...in his lap. If that weren't enough, his little brother and his girlfriend joined them a little further down the table too. When he finally managed to swallow down the mouthful of stew he managed a strangled, low, "Ebony!" then started to chuckle. Well, he hoped that he didn't need to get up any time soon. Placing his hand on top of hers, he gently slid their hands over onto his thigh, then gave a guilty glance around the table to see if anyone had noticed.
A sly grin jumped across her face as Ebony realized that Jay was being...responsive. It was proof that she was making him feel better in some capacity, and knowing she was succeeding in that filled her with a sense of accomplishment. It wasn't long however before her plans were interrupted...and by none other than TAI-SAN! Ughhh. Of all the people she didn't want to see right now, *ESPECIALLY* right now....it was her. A surge of aggravation went through her as Tai-San approached, taking a seat directly across from her and looking quietly upset about something. Jay's choking fit took a backseat to the anger she felt at the moment for the rude interruption. You manage to ruin EVERYTHING She thought the words directly at Tai-San, hoping the semi-psychic little freak would be able to pick up on the hateful vibes. Ebony didn't even realize she'd begun to glare at the other woman without so much as even blinking.
It wasn't until Jay let out an urgent but lighthearted Ebony! that she even realized her hand was still...occupied. "Oh..." For a second she looked surprised, as if she didn't know how it had even gotten there in the first place, but as Jay moved both their hands to a...safer location, she gave him a quick mischievous grin. Soon her attention was once more focused on the woman across from her, and Ebony didn't even try to hide her displeasure. Her left hand came to rest on the table as she leaned in forward a bit, staring pointedly at Tai-San and waiting in silence for a moment in an attempt to get her attention. "Can I help you with something?" There was a distinct note of unwelcome in her voice, and it wasn't so much a question as a demand for Tai-San to pack up and leave.
The possibilites that had begun to plague her mind had blocked out anything in reality actually going on. She was no longer upset with Jack for pulling her into that situation at inner, she was no longer upset with Patch for accusing her of such things, she was horrified with herself and the reasoning she'd begun to do. Leaning back in her chair, her arms crossed across her abdomen, hugging herself a bit, staring blankly at her food, Tai-San could hardly breathe let alone harmonize her spirit to the tune of the energy in the room.
Just as she'd halfway convinced herself that there was no way Mega had done this, that it was simply a cosmic fluke, a chill ran up her spine and Ebony spoke. It was as if Tai-San had been shaken by an unseen force back into reality, and she gave a bit of a shiver, rubbing her arms. "I'm sorry?" she asked Ebony, having not heard what she'd said exactly. She was looking pointedly at Tai-San, so she knew she was talking to her, the glare in her eyes seemed to say that Tai-San had done something wrong. "Oh, what now Ebony?" she snapped, glancing to Jay, who, on first glance looked the same, but now she could see his aura flaring in a particular direction, a realization that made her eyebrow slightly cock, glancing back to Ebony with a bit of confusion.
"It's a public eating place, don't start with me now. Do you really think Amber is going to be pleased if you start yet another fight at a meal time on this day?" Her eyes darted to Jay then down to the table, it wasn't his fault that Ryan had done what he'd done, but it was true. There was no reason to be so publicly rude, Tai-San had simply sat down at the table, it wasn't as if she was expecting their full and undivided attenion. She hadn't even spoken to them, or interrupted, and now she was at fault? Ebony could stuff it, that's what she could do.
The mischievous look that Ebony gave him just made Jay laugh all the more. As he took a sip of water he glanced over at Tai-San, noticing that she looked upset about something. He thought that it was nice of Ebony to inquire if she could help her, Tai-San did look like she needed someone to talk to. Jay gave Ebony's hand a little squeeze to show her his support.
His hands were still bothering him, probably would be for several days. Maybe if he'd put on some gloves he wouldn't have beaten them to a bloody pulp. As it was, he had dressed them after cleaning up the punching bag and the mat that he had used. They were just wrapped in long, thin strips of white cotton material at the knuckles. It made it a little harder to use his hands, but at least it would keep the wounds clean until they started to heal.
Jay snapped back to reality as Tai-San started going off on Ebony. What was her problem, Ebony just asked if she could help her? Then came her accusing glance at him as she started in about the fight earlier. What an awful thing to say to him. Did she hate him because of his history as a Techno too? Did she really blame that fight on him?
"Now just a minute Tai-San," Jay said quietly, getting really irritated with her, "there is no reason for you to be jumping all over Ebony. If anyone here is trying to start a fight, it's you." He glanced over at Ebony, wondering how she was keeping her cool through this, and he saw that she wasn't, not really. There was danger written all over her face, and he silently slipped his arm through her arm, just in case he needed to hold her back.
The desire to just lunge across the table and murder Tai San on the spot was almost overwhelming...So much so, that she didn't even hear May's lighthearted comment. Destroying Tai-San was the one single thought that consumed her. She could just...wrap her hands around her throat and just...and just squeeeeeeze until the raven haired girl no longer showed any signs of life. Ebony's nails began to dig into the table, all of muscles tensed as she went to stand part way up, leaning even further in Tai-San's direction. The snotty tone the other woman took with her made it painfully clear she had no intention of turning tail and leaving,...and Ebony hated to be told "no." She could feel her blood begin to boil, as Tai-San irritably continued on. It was a public place, but the ONLY reason Tai-San could possibly have wanted to sit in that particular spot, at least in Ebony's way of thinking, would be to just piss her off.
A look of sheer hate instantly sprung to her eyes as the other woman dared insinuate that Ebony should be at all concerned about what *AMBER* of all people thought. As if the fear of her arch rival's reaction to her behavior would be any kind of a deterrent! And sure enough, that did it. Tai-San had gone and pushed the wrong button, and now, Ebony was gonna kill her. But right as she was about to spring forward, Jay spoke.
From the sound of it, he hadn't caught on that when she'd asked Tai-San if she could help her...what she'd meant was, "get the hell out." He had immediately come to her defense, believing Tai-San's bitchy comments had come from nowhere. That small bit of naivety and misunderstanding on Jay's part was somehow endearing, and ended up being just enough to lessen the impulse to beat the living snot out of Tai-San right then and there. It didn't lessen her anger though, and she shouted back a few nasty comments of her own. "That's right." She glanced over at Jay to indicate her agreement with what he'd just said. Without realizing it, Ebony had continued to steadily move upward into a half standing position. "I see you obviously can't take a simple friendly question! Not very centered of you is it Tai-San?! Maybe you should go meditate! Or find something else to do that's just as unproductive! AWAY from here perhaps? You know, where you won't be bothering anyone!" The urge to just rip Tai-San apart welled up once more within her, and if it wasn't for the gentle pressure of Jay's arm around hers she might have given into the temptation.
Tai-San's chin tilted up, of course Jay would spring to Ebony's defense, of course he would try and make everything she did pure and everything anyone did against her evil. If only he knew the real Ebony, then perhaps he wouldn't be so quick to jump down someone else's throat over an altercation she got into. She could tell, as well, that he knew very little about his woman, a thought that calmed her to her very core. Nothing he said would have merit now, and her dark eyes turned on Ebony as she began her tirade.
"Friendly, Ebony? You call that body language mixed with your aura "friendly"? I think you need a new definition of friend. Besides, I don't see how my sitting down to eat dinner could possibly be bothering anyone. I didn't speak to you, I didn't look to you, I didn't interrupt whatever it was you two were doing," she looked pointedly at Jay once more, but her voice was merely serene, uncaring, unaffected by Ebony's histrionics. "I am going to finish my dinner, and then I will go to my room, if you are uncomfortable with mere presence they why don't you leave?"
Salene walking by the Main Cafe earlier was not lost on Tai-San, it would be quite easy to settle this matter, if Ebony wanted to be so childish. "Or shall I go get the City Leader? Seeing as she's our Tribe Leader, maybe she can mediate in this little altercation and decide who should do what," crossing her arms over her chest, Tai-San gave Ebony a highly indignant look, unyielding. Even though she felt wibbly and unwanted on the inside, she'd never show it on the outside.
Jay kept his hold on Ebony as she rose from her seat, knowing that what Tai-San had said really upset Ebony. He could feel that she was all wound up like a spring, ready to go off at the least provocation. Really he couldn't blame her for what she was saying to Tai-San, who was obviously already upset about something when she came in and was just taking it out on Ebony. If she couldn't even be civilized with someone who had offered help then she really should go and be by herself.
Now Tai-San was blaming it all on Ebony's aura? What a loon Tai-San could be with all of her metaphysical garbage. Often he felt that she just used it as a way of justifying whatever she wanted to do. Well he'd learned some of her catch phrases too. They all knew she was a fruitcake, there was no point in letting her get to them.
Turning back toward Ebony and directing his comments to her in a low, calming voice, he said, "Ebony, Tai-San is apparently having a personal problem today and is taking it out on you. Let's not let her negative energy affect us and ruin what should be a joyous day of celebration. Let's just sit back down and enjoy our meal, and let Tai-San get back to adjusting her aura, or whatever it is that she does," giving Tai-San a little look of disdain, "We don't need to bother Salene right now with this foolishness."
If Tai-San could have *POSSIBLY* made things worse...she had. Ebony really wouldn't have though anything could have made her even angrier than she already was....but somehow,...Tai-San had managed it. Did the little bitch really have the audacity to come up to their table and then say that Ebony could leave?!! The other woman was within reach...all it would take would just be to pull away from Jay hard enough and fast enough, and it would be all over. Her breathing became hard and fast, and at this point she was glaring so hard at Tai-San it almost hurt.
And then she said it....the only other thing Ebony could think of that simultaneously put her in check and enraged her even further. She'd brought up taking the matter to Salene. She couldn't...couldn't attack Tai-San in front of the people in the cafe...couldn't bring Salene into it because of course Salene would take Tai-San's side. Ebony was still trying to gain Salene's trust....getting in a fist fight with the passive aggressive little hooch was the absolute *last* thing she needed right now. It was everything she could do not to scream. Maybe it would be worth it....yes, she was almost certain it would be worth it...just one good hit. Just one good.....ripping to shreds.
Ebony's hands went to Jay's firm grip, trying to pry his hands off her for just long enough to at least shove Tai-San up against the wall or something...ANYTHING to get that smug look off her face. Jay's calm tone barely broke through the thick fog of hate clouding her eyes, and it took a spell to redirect her gaze in his direction. Yes. What he was saying was making sense...there was no point in letting Tai-San win if this was her plan all along. Maybe she wanted to get pummeled!! Maybe that had been her goal all along! Work her up into a frenzy so she could go prattle to Salene about getting the shit knocked out of her. Suddenly, Ebony was glad for Jay's collected clarity. He might have just saved her from a bigger mistake than she'd thought...but she wasn't about to let this slide. No, not by a long shot.
Her breathing became much less rough as she regained control over herself, giving Tai-San a look of deadly calm. "This isn't finished." It was a blatant threat, and at the moment, she didn't even care that Jay was there to hear it. She meant it. Just as soon as she was able...Tai-San would learn what it meant to be on Ebony's hit list. Reluctantly sitting back down in her seat, Ebony's eyebrows furrowed in a look of curiosity and concern down at Jay's hands. They were bandaged...and must have been recently so. They weren't like that before...oh god...Ryan. Jay must have gone off to blow some steam and ....wow, he must have been really angry. Gingerly Ebony took one of his hands in her own gently. She'd just tried to forcfully pry his hands off of her without even realizing he'd been hurt. A look of guilt came into her eyes as she looked up at him and then back to his wrapped hand. "Are you ok?"
Tai-San did not return Jay's look of disdain, simply set her eyes on him as if she were innocent, taking in this scene as if it were a movie. She was not amused, she was not affected, simply blank and observant. She was used to Jay the Techno, he was no different from Jay the Mall Rat, maybe a bit less demanding, but no less bossy, it really didn't phase her. The use of her common phrases was not lost on her, and it didn't bother her in the least. He was not a man of spirituality, she could tell that through the way he nearly spat the words back at her in his own way. Of course, a lot of kids after the virus weren't, and how could they be? When "God" or whomever they believed in had taken everyone over seventeen that they'd ever loved away from them, sometimes even those younger than that?
Tai-San sat back in her chair and gave Ebony a blankly uninterested look in her idle threat, of course it wasn't finished, was anything with Ebony ever "finished"? Rolling her eyes slightly as Ebony's attention was quickly distracted by Jay's bludgeoned hands, when she looked back up again, Siva was darting downstairs. "Siva," she said softly, leaning forward to watch her descend before standing up and leaving the Cafe without excusing herself.
A quick motion caught the corner of Ebony's eye but she paid it little attention to it until she heard Tai-San's quietly whisper "Siva." Then quick as a flash, Tai-San was gone, leaving Ebony still holding onto Jay's hand as a mask of sheer hate once again took over her countenance. Her eyes followed Tai-San out of the room. Hate. It was all she could feel at the moment for that vile woman, running after her sister to do God only knows what. If Tai-San was planning on getting back at Ebony through her sister,...it wasn't going to work. Quick as a flash Ebony was on her feet again, glaring at the doorway for only the amount of time it took for May to try to calm her down. Everything May was saying made perfect sense. Everything. It was sound and logical advise, but right now, she flat out didn't care. "You're right May." Her voice was calm, even, but decidedly icy. "That's the last thing I need."
Ebony turned to look at Jay for a second before immediately walking out of the room at a brisk but steady pace. "I'm going to check on Siva." She was focused and very intent. Calm rage continued to course through her veins over what had just gone on, and once again the lingering threat of what Tai-San was up to with her sister came back full force. No, this wasn't finished, not by a long shot. Ebony was going to end this here and now, and for the good of every other person in the tribe. She didn't know how...but somehow, she was going to deal with this. Once and for all. As if by they were suddenly given a will of their own, Ebony broke out into a half jog, with the set goal of getting to Siva before Tai-San had the chance.
Jay's attention snapped back to Ebony as she made a dark threat to Tai-San. Oh this was bad, so bad. Ebony was not one to just let things like this slide. The fact that she said it in front of him just proved to him how angry she was. His eyes went wide as he thought about the implications, too lost for words to respond to Ebony's concern over his hands. It was amazing how she could go from lethal threats to tender concern in a flash. He gave a glance across the table to see how Tai-San was taking it.
Tai-San was so weird. She had a completely vacant look on her face; her body was there, but nobody was home. Well he can't say that it surprised him, she was barely there to begin with. Just then something caught her attention outside of the Main Cafe' and she uttered, "Siva!" then she got up and left without another word. It was a relief to him that she left, until Ebony lept up from the table.
May's contribution, while well meaning, was a little disturbing. But at least she wanted to help, and that was nice. Ebony seemed to consider it for a moment, even to agree with it. "Thanks May," Jay said gratefully. Jay had a hard time believing that was all it would take to get Ebony to forget about this little incident, but he really didn't think that it was something Ebony would hold a grudge over for long.
When Ebony excused herself to go check on Siva, he nodded his head in acknowledgment. "That's a good idea," he said, thankful for the distraction. It was sweet of her to be concerned for her sister, especially in her condition. Just as Ebony left he heard a disturbance in the next room. It sounded like Lex was yelling at Gel. What a day this was turning out to be, so much for being in a family again.
The commotion out in the mall drew his attention and he turned to look. Ebony was on the stairs with a strange look on her face. Then she almost flew down the stairs and began yelling about Tai-San needing help. Jay jumped up and ran out of the cafe, heading to the stairs.
Suddenly Ebony's hand wasn't just comforting him any longer, and Jay gasped with shock. Some of the stew went down the wrong way and he started coughing and sputtering.
