Shattered faith?

I've seen the new Star Trek movie and I think I've lost faith in future series films by Abrams. I'm an avid fan of the series. I own all of Voyager, Next Generation, The Original Series, and most of Deep Space Nine. I've never felt so insulted since Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. The only things that made the film remotely worthwhile were the ( Read more... )

I personally didn't mind the movie so much but I see exactly your point. The whole...this isn't REALLY the Kirk and Spock you know is somewhat lame for such a hyped up movie. I did go in to the theater with a very negative idea of how the movie was going to come out. So I was happy that it was better for me then "sucked". I also went with my Dad who enjoyed it since he was one of the Original fans. He saw Star Trek when it first aired on TV when he was only 14 years old back in 1966.

I think part of the problem with the whole no family chemistry between characters was the fact that they picked each individual actor based on their looks, talent, fan base. ETC. Does Zachary Quinto look a hell of a lot like Spock? You bet. But did he have the dedication to really figure out who "Spock" is like Leonard Nimoy did? No. He was a bland Vulcan who could have passed for any Vulcan in the series. And the whole Uhura <3 Spock thing bugged the crap outta me. Uhura was a strong sensible woman that turned into a hot chick in a short skirt for a crappy romance side story. But they probably didn't bother with the whole interracial message thing that Gene Roddenberry envisioned because we see it all the time now and we don't care. It's focus was a different audience with different comfort zones.

All I have to say is Kirk & Spock relationship... what happened to Kirk Spock and McCoy damnit! McCoy adds so much to the other two and there wasn't a lot of him. He was an entertaining McCoy. And Simon Pegg as Scotty was the worse move they could have made. I like the actor but he's known for his comedy. That's just not Scotty. Chekov made me laugh though... he was cute.

"Nero" being the name of the villain... I agree. Lame. He should have been less evil more heroicand like you said not named Nero... pick a good Romulan name for gawd sake, Hell here's a decent Rihannsu name generator of what Romulan names are suppose to sound like!: http://www.alt-starfleet-rpg.org/misc/romulannamegen.html Don't forget I'm a big Romulan fan.

I prefer villains that I can sympathize with why they want to kill the good guys. (I know this is kind of a bad example but I love this movie for this reason): In The Mummy Imhotep (the mummy) only did all the crazy evil stuff he did because all he wanted was to be with his forbidden love Anck su Namun. He went through all this crap and had to kill a bunch of people to regenerate so he could bring her back to life and in the end of The Mummy Returns the bitch screws him over and Imhotep kills himself because he had nothing left to live for. I guess Nero just needed a better story for me then... I was a happy little miner that watched my planet blow up.... NOW I MUST KILL SPOCK!
