Chapter 5: What Really Matters By putting a hand on his back, Yoochun's father tried to make his son talk at least to understand what was going on.
“Did something happen?” Yoochun nodded “What is it then?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Did you do something wrong? What was it this time?” Yoochun smiled bitterly for a moment and then released the man who kept looking at him, curious.
“No. Not yet.”
“'Yet' ? What are you planning then? Because for you to act like this, it must be something serious.”
“Dad, I want to succeed you in the company, like you asked me to do, not because of you, but because I want to do it myself.”
“That's good to know.”
“However, I can't do everything the way that you want me to.” His father remained silent “I'm not giving Junsu up, like you asked me to.”
“Yoochun,” He started, trying to remain calm “I clearly told you what the conditions were when you told me that you wanted to become my successor. Don't you think that you have fooled around enough already? I have let you do as you pleased for five years but I think that it's about time that you put an end to this nonsense.”
“It's not nonsense” Yoochun shot back “This 'nonsense' lasted for five years and it's something serious for me but I didn't even realized it until now. I like Junsu, dad. It's not a kid's selfish whim, it's for real but the thing is that I always wanted your approval for every little thing however no matter what I do, it's never enough. Do you remember what happened five years ago when you became president?”
“What about it?"
“That day, I skipped school and went to a noraebang with my friends however our driver found me on the street and I had to go with him. I had an argument with you that day and the last thing that I wanted was to go to your party in the afternoon. I was sure that you would be worrying more about me doing something that might embarrass you than with the party itself because let's face it: I was never the perfect son you wanted me to be. When our driver stopped the car at the traffic light, I ran out of the car as fast as I could and crossed the street to the other side. That's when the accident happened.”
“I know that story.” The man said “If you know about it, then you should also remember that he died that day, due to the crash. I was so frustrated that day; so much that I could not even think straight but when we stopped in front of the dry cleaner for him to go and pick up my suit, I saw Junsu passing by. Did I ever tell you that I met him that day?”
“What are you trying to say, Yoochun?”
“I am saying” He tried, sighing in-between words “I am saying that something made me get out of that car that day, cross the street and bump into Junsu. If I didn't do that, I would not be here talking to you right now. I didn't know him, I had never seen him, but something about him, made me decide to leave that place. He is after all part of the reason I am alive.”
His father scoffed, showing his disapproval of what his son was saying “Nonsense. Like you said: you didn't even know him.”
“He was not the only one who made me get out of the car that day” Yoochun promptly indicated “You did it also. Although I wanted your approval, that day I just wanted to piss you off; I wanted to make you mad enough to realize what was going on.”
The man picked up the book that he dropped when his son hugged him and without looking at him, told him to go straight to the point.
“I am making a decision, dad. Five years ago I made a decision that ended up saving my life and now I am telling you that I am going to choose that path again. Probably you won't support my decision and I am sorry that that is the case because I always wanted you to look at me as the perfect son that I wanted to be but I'm not. Nonetheless I am your son and that is never going to change no matter how you think I am wrong.”
“Is that your final decision?”
“Yes. I think I'll be leaving home pretty soon also if everything goes right and don't worry because I won't ask for your help if things get rough” Yoochun said, smiling a little.
“Do what you want” The man said at last “Don't ask me to completely accept that decision though because it still sounds like insanity to me. You can also forget about you automatically succeeding me at the company”
“Can I still try to get there by merit?” He tried, coyly and his father looked at the boy, intrigued “I know you are not a man to waste a person with potential.”
“If your talent and potential manages to impress me in the future, than maybe you can have a chance.” He declared, making Yoochun smile widely.
His son looked at his watch again. He had two hours and twenty minutes left to meet Junsu and apologize to him so he rushed to the door while his father was still looking at him “Park Yoochun!” Yoochun looked back “After leaving this house I want you to know that you will remain with the responsibility of keeping your Sunday's available. The universe will stop if your mother doesn't have her sons present at the family's weekly gathering.”
“Don't you think I know that?” The youngster replied, smiling at his father
“I thought you had something urgent to do?” “Appa?” “What?” “Thank you. I mean it.” The man cleared his throat, trying not to make it too obvious that he was embarrassed by his son's grateful words and Yoochun dashed as quick as he could, going down the stairs without even replying to his mother when she called him.
Junsu's house was near so he could get there fast even if he walked. As soon as he got there, the boy knocked on the door, loud enough to wake up a whole block, but no one appeared. He tried again, but still no answer so he decided to call Junsu only to realize that he had forgotten his cellphone.
“You got to be kidding me...” Frustrated and not knowing what else to do, he sat on the steps in front of Junsu's house, cursing the heaven's for his lack of luck.
“Who do you think you are you cursing like that, huh?” Yoochun recognized the familiar voice, but still was unable to prevent himself from jumping when he looked to his left and saw G-Kan there.
“STOP showing up like that, please!”
“I thought you were used to it by now” he said “Anyway, I came to rescue you yet again. Here you go.” And the man handed Yoochun his cellphone
“OH”How did you... Never mind!” Yoochun picked up the device and pressed the number one contact on his list, trying to establish the connection but Junsu was not picking up. “He is not picking up the phone.” He said
“Really?”
“Can't you make him pick up the call?” G-Kan gave him an 'are you kidding' look
“Do you think things work like that for real?”
“He is not picking up. Hey, who's fault is it if he doesn't answer the phone and I die waiting for him? Doesn't this count as an act of redemption?”
An eye-roll “Of course not. You didn't even talk to him yet.
“Can't you just send him a warning or something?”
“Are you serious? A warning? Of course, I'll just get my magical wand, shake it around and warn him about you wanting to talk with him. For real, after 850 years doing this, humans still surprise me...” The blonde admitted
“JUNSU?” He screamed, this time scarring G-Kan
“Did he pick up the phone?”
“He did!”
“Yoochun?” The boy asked on the other side
“You see? You didn't even need my help” G-Kan said
“It's not like you WOULD help me either. Don't you guys have a complaints book for the mystical entities or something?”
“Who are you talking to, Yoochun?”
“JUNSU!” Junsu was just starting to thing that Yoochun had gotten crazy by then
“Yes...? Are you okay? Do you need to tell me something, because I'm pretty busy at the m...”
“NO! Don' hang up!” The elder screamed
“I was not going to... What do you want?”
“Tell me where you are. I need to talk with you.”
“Aren't we talking right now?” He said, stating the obvious.
“No, I mean I have to see you, because it's something really important that can't be said through the phone.”
“Well I'm sorry, but no can do. You won't be able to see me for awhile. I'm at the train station, about to get the last train to Busan.”
“Busan?? Why Busan?”
“Busan? Oh.... I see...” G-Kan mumbled
“What? What is happening in Busan?"
“You know... since your fates are fated to be different now... er... no pun intended on the “fated” thing - Junsu is starting to follow his fate also. If I remember correctly he met his girlfriend in Busan."
“What girlfriend?? Yah! Why is it Busan now? I still have time, how come he's getting his girlfriend in Busan now?”
“Who are you talking to, Yoochun?”
“It doesn't matter. I'll go get you right now.”
Yoochun heard a chuckle on the other side “Would you mind telling me what is going on? If I remember correctly, we were mad at each other and if I also remember correctly, we had decided not to see each other any more.
“There must be something wrong with your memory because I don't recall any of that. We just... bantered a bit.”
"We just "bantered" a bit?"
“That's right. Now, you said you were at the train station, right?”
“Yes; About to get inside the last train.”
“YOU CAN'T!!” Yoochun screamed, surprising Junsu
“Why?”
“Because I'll die if you go!”
G-Kan sighed “Oh... that would be such a romantic sentence if you were speaking metaphorically...”
“Well, I'm not flattered given what you told me the last time we talked. You can die at your will and I'll send some flowers to your family later.”
“Yah, I'm serious here. Do you want so see me die because of you? And why the hell are you going to Busan? Is it really because of what happened with us?” He asked, barely breathing in between sentences.
“My uncle died. I have to go to his funeral and I'll stay there awhile. Did you really think it was because of you?”
Yoochun chuckled a bit “Yeah. Thanks for bringing me back to reality.”
“Hey, Yoochun-ah, tell me honestly: are you worried because you are just afraid that I might not forgive you for what you did? Are you afraid to disappear?” What Junsu said made Yoochun look at G-Kan at once only to be given a stare from the guy.
“I told you I talked to him.” G-Kan said
“The whacko went to see you also?”
“HEY!” The blonde yelled
“Well, you are partially right. I am actually a little scared. I mean, I don't even know if what he told me that will happen is ACTUALLY going to happen but I'm not willing to try my luck. However the true reason why I wanted to talk to you is because I wanted to thank you.”
“Thank me for what?” “For saving me five years ago and for saving me again, five years later.”
“I didn't save you yet.”
“Yes you did, you just don't know it yet. I think there was more than a way for you to save me after all.” Yoochun said
Junsu did not reply so Yoochun waited a few seconds more yet, Junsu kept silent so the elder looked at the phone, trying to see if the call had disconnected, but no, it was still there.
“Junsu? Junsu, can you hear me?”
“I hate when you talk in code, Yoochun.” Junsu replied, but Yoochun noticed that the boy's voice was not coming from the phone so he was not all that shocked when he turned around an saw Junsu walking towards him, with his phone on his hand.
“What are you doing here?” Yoochun asked “I thought you were going to Busan.”
“I planned to, but there were no more tickets for today.”
“But you said that...”
“I lied. I wanted to see how you'd react.” Yoochun rolled his eyes, sending G-Kan an angry look
“You knew about this, didn't you?”
“He is here?” Junsu asked to a puzzled Yoochun
“You can't see him? He's right there!” He pointed
“His matters with me are settled so now he's no longer able to see me.” G-Kan clarified
“Now tell me,” Junsu started “what did you mean when you said I saved you again? What did you do anyway, Park Yoochun?”
“I made a decision. I'll go on with my major and if I have the chance, I'll go to my father's company but I won't use the 'back door'. I talked to him and finally told him what I never had the courage to. Oh, and maybe you will be interested in helping me look for a house, because I'm planning on leaving my parents' soon.”
“Won't you regret it?”
“Nope. I regret not having the courage to go forward with this sooner out of fear for my family's reaction. I'm really sorry you had to put up with me pushing you back and forward and being indecisive about what I really had to do.”
Junsu kept looking at Junsu, tilting his head and Yoochun could see the wheels turning inside his head. The elder kept smiling at him though and Junsu had no idea of what kind of reaction to have. Yoochun had never been so determined about something as he was now; actually, Yoochun was never determined AT ALL and although he proclaimed himself to be the family's rebel, he was the first to want to have their approval on everything.
While consistently staring at each other, G-Kan decided that was time for them to stop it and move along, so he made a sound, clearing his throat
“Are you going to keep this? Yoochun, your confession is taking too long...”
“I'm trying to be romantic, alright?” Yoochun said, groaning to G-Kan, who remained invisible to Junsu.
“Who wants romantic? This has to be: 'I'm sorry', 'I love you', Kiss. Exactly in this order.”
“I still have some time, 'ya know? I think I can afford being romantic”
“You have time but I don't so I need you to apologize and him to accept it so that I can go away and get rid of you. I have much to do and you are a pain in the ass so spare me; you have your entire life to be romantic.”
“What is he saying?” Junsu asked, curious. “That I'm a pain in the ass and that I'll have my entire life to be romantic.”
The younger sighed then “Oh right... I had forgotten that I'll have to put up with you for my entire life... I start thinking that maybe I did something wrong in a past life.”
“Yah!” “Boys?” G-Kan interrupted again.
“Alright, alright” Yoochun said, turning his attention to Junsu again
“I'm sorry for what I did and you know I love you.”
“You ARE an ass, but I love you too, besides, I'm dumb, so you know I forgive you. I had forgiven you already but you sure took a lot of time realizing things and saying them.”
“Amen to that!” The blonde blurted “Alright, so my work here is done. Yoochun, it was NOT a pleasure to meet you, but I think you already know that.” He said, smiling coyly and Yoochun rolled his eyes “I'm sorry but I'll have to disappear now, okay? Tell Junsu that I wished him luck for the future; he'll need it. Going now!” He said finally, snapping his fingers but nothing happened.
“Oh! Hello.” Junsu said, bowing to G-Kan.
“Wait... can YOU see me?”
“Yes. Can you see him also, Yoochun?” He asked his boyfriend who nodded
“Oh Oh... this is not a good sign...”
“Wait, if you are still here and if I can see you... does that mean I'm still going to die?!” G-Kan lowered his head then
“It's worst that that... HE is coming...” He said and both Junsu and Yoochun tilted their heads, keeping a puzzled look. The couple saw how G-Kan turned pale and suddenly a loud roar that seemed like that of a thunder was heard.
At a distance a silhouette could be seen and slowly the person was seen clearly: a tall man, dressed all in black, with intimidating eyes.
“Who is that?” Yoochun asked
“My boss” G-Kan muttered
“G-Kan!” The man called, with a deep voice.
“Shit...” The boy exclaimed, in a low voice while slowly turning his head and seeing who he didn't want to see at the moment “Oh... Hi...”
“What have I told you, huh?” He asked, in an angry tone as he got near the blonde.
“I'm sorry.”
“You are coming with me.” He announced, grabbing G-Kan's ear
“Wait, wait, TOP-hyung, wait...it hurts!” The taller man groaned, not listening to the complaints of his 'employee' and dragged him along as both of them disappeared suddenly.
Yoochun couldn't help but smirk at the scene though “I almost pity him...” He said, looking at Junsu. “Almost.”
