well; it's been an interesting summer thus far. needless to say; seeing kev on a daily basis and having a home with him in it is amazing (with maid service and free of charge)... but working at baystreet isn't all peaches and cream...
no, seriously...
pulled a newsies pretty much. and here's the long and the short of why i haven't been around (calling, myspace, online, in person, or anything else)
well; we work a lot... A LOT... i mean; the runs are short, and tech weeks are long and load ins are long; but that's to be expected; so here's a typical work week, during running of shows:
sunday: call 5:30-midnightish; sometimes woodshop call in the morning
monday: (monday's after opening; we are guaranteed off) but otherwise woodshop or maitenance or clean the theatre 9am-8pm
tuesday: woodshop 9am-3pm; theatre 6:30-midnightish
wednesday: double show day theatre call 12:30-midnightish
thursday: (usually) kidstreet 10:30-5:00 at the theatre; 6:30-midnightish calltime
friday: sometimes woodshop call/electrics call/ theatre call/ admin call in the morning; 6:30-midnight calltime
saturday: double show day: 2:30-midnight; with occasionally a morning woodshop call
now for the newsies story: well; it's not the work, even though it is a LOT and we get paid SQUAT and gas is EXPENSIVE and our house is 1.5 hours away from the woodshop and 1/2 hour from the theatre and food is EXPENSIVE; that's not the problem. it was the fact that we wouldn't get our call times until ridiculous hours (for example; kevin and i leave the theatre at 1AM, and said goodbye to the people who give us call times, check the callboard and it says nothing; so we get home at like 1:30/2:00ish and johnny - roomate - tells us, "i heard we have call at 9am tomorrow; so we call scott - who gives us calltimes - and he says, "yes you have call, i WILL see you at 9" and hangs up onb us) and above that it was the way we were being treated during such calltimees; they call in too many people for the little bit of busy work they find for us to do... so what happens? we stand around and take 4 times as long as if scott would just give us the fucking LIST and elt us figure out who's gonna do what ourselves...
AND the final straw was tuesday; on sunday we were told we wouldn't have call until tuesday (after we've complained to the co-artistic director and he insisted that we were going to use the callboard for all call times) and my mom and dad are in town (i see them about twice a year); and we opened on sat; so this monday was guarenteed off, and we were told we had tuesday morning off; so we get splish splash (water park) tickets for tuesday morning and we get aquarium tickets for monday and me and kev spend the day with my rents and see harry potter; i get a TEXT MESSAGE towards the end of the day saying i have call at 9am in the woodshop on tuesday (1.5 hours from home) meaning that i have to cut the night short with my rents and cancel our plans for the next day (after we paid for tickets)...
so then we went to call and kev, me, with anonymous lists from other interns about their concerns went to the producer and basically said this NEEDS to be fixed or you're not going to have any employees left by the end of the summer...
and, we had a meeting, and let's put it this way, "we beat 'em." we had today off and are guananteed that we will be treated better, or there will be a few less people in charge of us if you catch my drift.
and THAT is what i've been up to... now i have to go do laundry for me and kevs cuz he's at work (sucks he's the only sound guy so he's pretty much at work every day; they have a kids traveling show in there right now)
but on the other hand the cast of turandot is FANTASTIC and sure as hell beats the night season's diva cast... i mean; we just opened and i've already chilled with the cast and stuff; it's fantastic!
toodles, love to all
