She remembers the aftermath. Not so much the parties as the hangovers the next day, the ruined furniture and the torn dresses, the lingering regrets and taste of sour vodka in her mouth. The passionate nights that ended in shouted obscenities and accusations, the once hot bed going cold around her. The growing disquiet in her heart, the sense that nothing she ever did would make things right because she wasn’t the problem-no, the blame lay on him. She can remember the burn, the pull and the desire, but her clearest memories are of him leaving.

But that last night, he wasn’t the one who walked out the door.

He remembers how sweet she was, so desperate to please and eager for more. It was always more fun when they were willing to give it their all-and then some. He remembers the taste of her on his tongue, the softness of her skin, the way she cried out in the throes, how he made her squirm. The way her cheeks flushed, a schoolgirl’s blush, when he cornered her in crowded rooms to slide his hands beneath her skirt, heedless of the strangers around them.

He can’t remember why she left.
