I watched the series with my mom, recording the show on ION. I was aware season 1 was highly edited but season 5 at the end cut out the backstory bits.
I watched the series on ION (also watched the partial run on NBC and via some *ahem* other sources), but just watched season five on ION.
I saw the Canadian press articles playing up that the back story would be brought into play again, so I kept waiting after Tia was looking into it for something to come up and nada. I was puzzled about it and kept meaning to ask about it here.
For whatever reason, it seems either ION or whoever handled the syndication deal (probably the latter) chopped out the majority of Toby's backstory in the first season, so I guess they felt it necessary to not refer back to it again. They wanted a cop show with a mind reader, not a mind reader with a mysterious past who also happened to work with the cops.
I keep hoping for at least a MOD version, either by season or as a complete series, but it's odd that it's not even available on Hulu, Amazon Video, or Netflix (just guessing on the Netflix one).
I have the Season 1 DVDs and nothing was cut out of them. The story and feel of the show has changed hugely between every season so far. But I find it weird they'd actually cut bits out. Ugh.
The change between season one and two was at least partly due to the American network dropping out, so the Canadian network made changes to streamline things to save money so they could get a second season.
A lot of shows in American syndication get "trimmed" to fit in more commercials or to snip out any potentially offensive language and the like, because the shows are often shown in time slots that are earlier than the original airings which could allow for stronger content.
I've never seen a show that methodically cut out an entire storyline for no apparent reason. I guess they didn't like Toby's mysterious past, which was mostly dropped anyway, so they cut out all they could, including the bit in the series finale.
