[Sam Carter] Prepping for launch...

Aug 06, 2008 22:31

Who: Sam Carter
When: May 15th, mid-morning-ish.
Where: Airforce Hangar
Invited: Jon O'Neill, anyone else that might have reason to help load Sam's UAV into the Jumper or another valid reason to be out that way... and the clearance to be allowed past the SFs on duty.
Status: Incomplete

"Easy," Sam cautioned, standing down beside the cylindrical grey-green tube that was the body of the single Ancient Puddle Jumper Gamma site possessed. "Just a little further... A little further..." The master technical sergeant aiding with the retro-fit watched her hand signals more than heard her voice, seated as he was at the controls of the hydraulic lift being used to support the makeshift launch structure his team was strapping to the Jumper's roof. "There. There, that's perfect." She held up her palm to indicate a stop. Machinery hummed and the last of the structure settled into place. Two grease-monkeys immediately swarmed up the sides of the craft to secure the final bolts and complete the final welds on the strut.

The UAV was to be sat in the external cradle and released via remote control from within the Jumper itself. Sam had at one time considered rebuilding the UAV to allow it to be deployed directly from the back of the Ancient gate ship, but had quickly nixed that idea once she'd figured out the extra time that would add to the prep time. The launch cradle was cheaper, easier, and a whole lot less hassle for the UAV conversion team.

As the last bolts spun into place, Lindstrom and a couple of others grabbed laptops and testors, and ducked into the back of the Jumper to begin finalizing the computer interface while Evans dealt with the UAV itself.

Sam stepped back to survey the work, her hands on her hips. A smile touched her lips. Tired as she was, she still knew this was gonna work. It had to.
