Who: Sam Carter
When: Wednesday, May 15th, about 7am-ish.
Where: Gate Operations
Invited: Jack, Daniel, anybody on a gate team heading on the Tau mission; optionally senior colony administration.
Status: Incomplete
The briefing adjourned. What information that could be gleaned from the Sgt in charge of Tau's colonists and the other leaders had been assessed, so Sam had some idea of what to expect the MALP to send back via telemetry. But, the colonel knew full well that expectations weren't always met on the other side of the event horizon.
The machine rumbled its way into the gate aperture, disappearing into the puddle. Sam sat behind one of the monitoring computers, watching the screen as tracking data crunched across it. "The MALP is through," she said generally to the essential personnel gathered for the operation. She hit a couple of buttons on the keyboard. "Receiving telemetry now."
A grainy video appeared in the monitor's viewing window. The camera's point of view shook a little as the MALP lumbered forward and came to a stop. Sam panned the camera slowly for a visual of the area. The gate appeared to be set on a raised up platform, a ziggurat-shaped dais near the water. Boats could be seen floating near the base -- long dugouts that looked reminiscent of canoes built by Central American tribes. A wide plank-and-rope bridge was strung from the gate dais to a narrow spit of land beyond. The land had a damp, if golden, tone to it. And, indeed, as the camera panned further, it became obvious that the gate was set in the middle of a floodplain that was very active. The land was more marsh than field or forest. Indeed, one or two trees could be seen rising out of the reeds, but they were the wide-rooted, droopy-limbed kind that could thrive in highly humid environments. Even so, there were no heavy copses by any stretch. In fact, the vista could almost bring to mind images of that old movie 'Waterworld', save for the rope bridge and muddy path leading away from the gate to the mountain.
The area, from what the MALP could see, didn't look like it had seen an aerial assault, but the week-old attack was still evident in the destruction of the docks and several of the boats. Sam shifted the camera's focus occasionally, to get a better sense of the scope. Across the bridge, a winding path lead up a hill. Adjusting the camera, there was a long path that led up the side of a low mountain. The crest of the hill made it impossible to see the outline of whatever settlement might be there. According to locals, it would be something of a hike to get up there -- a good 2-day hike, in fact.
For another team other than SG-1. Huhn.
Still, she also kept an eye on the other readouts the MALP sent back. "Radiation, atmosphere, temperature levels all normal. Well-within scope." She'd expected nothing else, of course. "Barometer's steady." She glanced back over her shoulder to Jack -- who couldn't help but hover nearby. "Looks like we're good to go."
