Summary: Fuji and Yanagi meet in the kitchen and have a little 'competition' with words against the other And Yanagi is really quite mean D:
Watching the liquid swirl around in his cup Yanagi sorted out a few extras to make a perfect cup of tea. A few clinks could be heard as the tea spoon knocked against the porcelain for a moment before all sound ceased as the spoon was placed in the sink. He tried thinking of which book he could read next, or if he should do a little more exploring or something. Somehow all he got was a blank though which was why he'd come downstairs for an inspiration drink.
Fuji came down the stairs, a tea tray balanced on one hand and a box tucked under his other arm. As he reached the kitchen, he was forced to use an elbow to manoeuvre the door handle and so didn't notice that the kitchen was already occupied until he'd already opened the door.
Turning at the sound of someone else entering the room Yanagi merely tilted his head a little, moving over to help Fuji out a little. "Maybe you should have taken two trips?" It wasn't really supposed to be an insult, maybe just a little advice as the other looked like he was struggling with carrying so much.
If Fuji was surprised to be greeted, he didn't show it. "I didn't expect the door to be shut," he answered, shifting the box onto the table and carefully depositing the tray next to it.
"Ah I see" Carefully placing the door stopper in front of the door so no one else was caught off guard he turned back to his tea. "Care for a drink? It's only just boiled" He figured he should be polite at least. Or at least pretend to be nice.
Fuji hesitated. He couldn't say he felt entirely inclined to spend more time in Yanagi's company than he strictly had to, but...it wasn't like he had anywhere else to go just yet. "Un, thank you," he consented at last, reasoning that someone else might come past, who might make more preferable company.
Shrugging a little Yanagi turned to start making the tea, only to pause after a moment. "How do you take it?" He questioned, figuring if he was going to make tea for the other he should at least do it correctly. Though it wasn't like he wanted to be particularly pleasant to the other.
"Black, with one sugar and a drop of milk," said Fuji, idly, fussing with the box. and smiling secretly to himself.
"Got it" Yanagi nodded, counting each off as he added them, stirring the tea before handing it over to the other boy, holding out the handle for him to take. "There"
"Ah, thank you," said Fuji, turning to take the proffered cup. He sipped at it gingerly, mindful of the heat and then set it on the table. "So what brings you down here, all by yourself?" he asked after a moments pause.
"You're welcome" He murmured, not entirely meaning it. "Ah, I just needed to think over which book to start next." He shrugged faintly. "I have quite a few to get through and wasn't quite sure which genre seemed the most satisfying right now, and yourself?" If Fuji was allowed to ask questions he could too.
"Nothing in particular really; today seems to be one of those rare days where I have nothing to do." he replied, pushing the box to one side, apparently having given up on it.
"Ah, one of those days..." He eyed the box subtly, though somehow he knew Fuji had probably noticed anyway. "What's with the box?" He guessed he was a little curious as the other kept fiddling with it.
"Ah, now that would be telling, wouldn't it." said Fuji, teasingly, not overly willing to let Yanagi in on the secret. He had a feeling that if he knew, Yanagi might spoil the surprise.
"I suppose it would, though I didn't realise a box could hold so many secrets of course" He raised an eyebrow, placing the tea down to cross his arms trying to work out what it was for.
"Ah, now that would all depend on what one put in it, now wouldn't it." said Fuji, sipping at his tea again, amused.
"Oh of course. However it would be limited to the size of the box. You could hardly fit a shoe in a trinket box" Yanagi picked the spoon up off the side to twirl it around in his cup again as some of it had settled, taking another sip.
"Why would you want to?" countered Fuji, "And besides," he went on, smirking, "Don't you know that the biggest surprises often come in the smallest boxes?"
Pressing off against the counter Yanagi moved forward to sit at the table instead, still not letting Fuji leave his sight. Even though he concluded that had a 'Just in case' ring to it. "Of course I realise that, people often have a ring in a small box when they propose don't they? Isn't that a rather huge surprise for most people?" He countered back.
"Saa...You can do better than just that." said Fuji, philosophically, "You could present them with a box in which they ~expected~ there was a ring and instead held something else. That would be an even bigger surprise."
"You could, but wouldn't that hurt them? I doubt if there was a possibility there could be a ring there, for example if you were presenting it to someone you loved, you would hardly do that in case it got there hopes up" He raised an eyebrow, smirk forming across his face. "Unless of course you're the type to hurt the one you love, Fuji?"
"But we weren't talking about love, nor niceties were we?" Fuji pointed out, his expression becoming a further degree of cold politeness, "We were talking about boxes, and what sort of surprise one might hold."
"It does coincide though, if you think about it. I merely asked as you mentioned the fact that it would be a bigger surprise. I only stated that it wouldn't be very nice" He shrugged rather casually, hiding the amusement he was feeling. He knew he shouldn't be doing this, it wasn't even like him to be doing so, but it caused a reaction. And said reaction was making him curious to see any other reactions that may come.
"Well I thought that it would have been obvious," said Fuji simply, smiling and marking on the mental list in his head, a second reason he wasn't too fond of Yanagi- the boy was more of a smart-alec than he'd suspected.
"Maybe it was but I was just picking loopholes in your speech?" He sat back in his chair, crossing one leg over the other and leisurely sipping at his tea. "I'm sorry I couldn't help it" Though the small twitch of lips showed he wasn't that sorry at all.
"Of course," said Fuji diplomatically, making a second mental note. "Of course it's all a moot point anyway; this particular box is big enough to hold a television, let alone a ring."
"True" Yanagi agreed, wondering how that ever came about. "Though the reason we got onto this topic was because you wouldn't tell me what was so secretive about a box to begin with, and because you insisted on confirming your reasoning."
"Ah well, that's because I didn't tell you that the box itself is entirely uninteresting. It's just a box; currently empty," he said, knowing it would irk the other boy. "And what is going to go into it isn't going to be...shall we say, subtle?"
"Then you should have simply have said that instead of wasting time, no?" He sent Fuji a small smile, seeing through how he was trying to annoy him. "Not subtle could mean many things Fuji; therefore you're still not completely giving much away."
That's the point." said Fuji, "And you forget, I have little to do today, so this hardly amounts to wasting time." he smiled, "And there's something else I didn't say- whilst the box and it's contents may not be very interesting, their potential uses are very interesting indeed." he paused, taking another sip of tea. "But to find out what that will be, you'll have to wait, like everyone else."
"I never said you were wasting your time" He leant forward a little to place his cup back onto the table. "And I don't think I want to wait and pretend to be interested. A box is a box, and unless there's a bomb in it, I'm not that curious"
"Then you should have specified whose time you meant, and wasted less," said Fuji, highly amused. He gave a shrug, "but suit yourself"
"I'm merely amusing myself until I decide on the book I want to read. I'll need a new cup of tea to take up with me anyway" He shrugged.
Fuji settled back into his chair, falling quiet and nursing his own near-empty mug. "Well, you have a whole library to pick from, after all..."
"That and I borrow a few from Yagyuu" Yanagi shrugged. "We both tend to read similar material at times, so it's rather convenient"
"Ah yes," said Fuji with a dry chuckle, "I had heard the library had become Yagyuu-san's second home. I tend to avoid the main tables myself."
Lips twitching a little Yanagi raised an eyebrow. "Ah, the table to be avoided? I'd recommend not going to a lot of places here if you wanted to avoid such things"
"I don't intend to become a hermit, just because some people have no self-control, or any consideration," said Fuji, slightly acidly. He did not look up, however, from where he was sat, instead stared into his mug and wished he hadn't stayed in the kitchen. He threw in a wish for his tea to magically heat up again, whilst he was at it.
"Don't blame me, blame Niou or Yagyuu." Yanagi's eyebrow raised. Haha did Fuji think he was including him and Kirihara in there? Though it was true about the pantry episode, heh. "Our doubles one is known for being unpredictable right?" His lips twitched a little, watching the others actions and analysing them.
"Who said I was blaming anyone by name? That's a bold assumption." countered Fuji, still refusing to look up although he knew he would have to soon. He shrugged, "I wouldn't say they were unpredictable. Spontaneous, yes, but not exactly unpredictable," he went on, thinking that Yagyuu Hiroshi was probably one of the more predictable people he knew.
"You never used words no, but your expression and body language is practically saying so" He leant forward, resting an elbow on the table, arm moving up to hold his head up with the back of his hand. "Yagyuu has changed a little yes, but there are times he still surprises me with how he acts. I am one of his best friends after all"
Fuji looked up, his face perfectly composed into his usual distant smile. "That's just your opinion, I do believe," he said, simply, "and as for Yagyuu...well, I can't say I've spent much time with him."
"Perhaps" Yanagi replied idly. "And with Yagyuu I suppose he is rather predictable, just can be unpredictable now and again. Then again I think most people are like that aren't they? Unless of course they're different, rather unique in some way"
"Oh i should think so," said Fuji neutrally, "and of course they are unique. Just like everybody else." he finished his tea and stood, welcoming the distraction he found in taking it to the sink and rinsing it out.
"Though no one is ever entirely unique are they? They will always have similar qualities to others, same interests and so on. It's probable that only personal opinion of a person can truly make them unique to them" He tilted his head a little to keep watching the other.
Fuji chuckled. "I wouldn't agree to that," he said, "You might have the same hobby, art, for instance, is a hobby, but there's a vast difference between, for example, pickling half a cow and painting a vase of flowers."
"Art's a subject of it's own though isn't it? A person who indulges in art further than say a class's requirements will always be unique due to their imagination and creative intellect."
"It's still classed as a hobby if the person isn't making money from it," said Fuji, "and even then, two users of the same medium, by which you're argument would render them homogeneous, would clearly treat said medium differently, and visibly so. Which by my reckoning ~would~ make them unique."
"But you find that even in Art similar designs are followed, the same movements, the same patterns and ideas. Not everyone can make something completely original, not everyone has that sort of insight and ability to come up with something that hasn't been done before. By all means, people may paint things of the same object and be completely different in how they look due to the person's ability or style, but in the end it's still the same object."
“Saa... maybe so, but what a bitter way to see things," said Fuji, settling back in his chair. "No wonder artists and academics disagree so often. If everyone followed that logic then no one could ever find joy in the little details, and all art would be reduced to identical pixels in little rows. Besides, you're not counting in the intent of the artist. Of course if there are two artists painting the same image, or one copying another, then they may well ~intend~ for the art not to be unique. Which would skew the whole argument considerably"
Looking thoughtful for a moment Yanagi sat back as well before shrugging. "I suppose it would depend on the person's passion for the subject though ne? To someone who isn't interested in art it would all look like identical pixels in a row anyway." It usually did to him anyway, especially when it was art of objects such as flower pots and things. How boring.
"Then I feel sorry for them," said Fuji, "Because they really don't know what they are missing out on. It's one the basic drives of man, did you know? To try and capture some true image of life and get others to see it as you do,"
"But some prefer to use words rather than images. Sometimes an image can be a lie, and what is a lie to anyone other than hurtful?" He eyed the other carefully. "Though I suppose you'd just argue back that words can be lies as well"
“Precisely. And doesn't the adage run that a picture is worth a 1000 words anyway?" said Fuji. "On that note, Yanagi-san, I know I exude a magnetism that is hard to resist, but it's rude to stare."
"But that would be a matter of opinion and depend on the quality of the image" He added before smirking slightly. "I'm merely trying to not be rude by turning and not looking at you at all, isn't that rude in conversation when someone is speaking to you?"
"There is a world of difference, Yanagi-san, between giving someone your full attention, and eye-balling them." countered Fuji pointedly. "Which I think you already know."
"Of course, but it would help if I was actually staring. I merely watched you more carefully for a moment. Though I must say I'm impressed that you managed to catch that, most people wouldn't"
"I think most people would agree that i am not 'most people'. " said Fuji, his smile broadening a little.
"Probably, but I presume they would be people who only see the cover rather inside the book?" Yes, another rather mean remark.
"Ah...but then so many people in this world are so horribly...short sighted? Wouldn't you agree? Not to mention that many just don't have the wit to keep up with unusual literature these days."
"That would be true." Yanagi's lips quirked up a little into an almost smile. "Literature is something I can talk about Fuji-san; Art just seems too simple for me. I like seeing complex words that brush strokes to be honest"
"Well true. A lot of art is minimalist these days, but then...Saa…there's a lot of 'overly' complicated words as well. Purple prose I believe it's called. Rather crass, in my opinion."
"I guess that is also true, remarkably it seems as though we may have managed to agree on something Fuji-san" Yanagi shifted a little, glancing to the window of the kitchen for a moment.
"And why shouldn't we agree?" asked Fuji raising an eye, "I don't recall having ever set out to cause friction between us."
Shrugging a little Yanagi glanced back at the other boy. "I never did either, it just seemed that for the past half an hour or so all we have been doing is trying to win some kind of invisible competition with words"
"And who started that, I wonder," replied Fuji, his eyes opening just a bit, "Because I'm not entirely convinced it was me."
Raising an eyebrow Yanagi sighed. "If it was me it was only because I received an aura of such dislike Fuji-san. I assure you I don't normally going around doing that sort of thing unless I feel...." He paused for a moment, thinking of the most correct word, or even words. "As though I have to as a defence mechanism"
Fuji smiled again, his eyes sliding shut again. "Fair play, Yanagi-san, I suppose I can't really argue with that." He leaned back in his chair, tapping his fingers idly on the table top, "But then...how easily riled you are..."
Snorting faintly Yanagi leant forward, leaning his chin on the back of his hand thoughtfully. "I guess I can be, I'm a rather sensitive person even if I try and hide it most of the time" Why he just admitted that to Fuji he didn't know, maybe it was some kind of warning that if he was upset he'd do something about it?
"Oh sensitivity... that can be a problem" agreed Fuji, diplomatically, "It's something like animal instinct. If you go around prodding at wounds, you should expect to get scratched, don't you think?"
"It can I suppose" Yanagi frowned a little. "Does that mean I prodded at a wound somehow and am going to get scratched Fuji-san?" His own eyes did open at that, showing that he actually meant what he said.
"That all depend on how carefully you tread, now doesn't it?" replied Fuji, standing and stretching a little.
"Which would be a little difficult considering I don't know how deep the wound is. I don't want to be enemies with you" He stated simply, staring at the table. "I don't really want enemies at all; this island's ways is bad enough as it is without that."
"Then my advice is to stop prodding people you don't know all that well. It clearly only leads to trouble." said Fuji succinctly. "You've already been scratched at, Yanagi, though I doubt you even noticed, and that time wasn't with such provocation. But despite appearances, I don't actually want to wish anyone harm."
"Perhaps I'm not even prodding and you're just lashing out for other reasons anyway" He murmured, not sure if the other heard him say it. "I can't help how you feel Fuji, but I assure you I'm not purposely trying to hurt you either" Which could have been different a moment ago until he realised how hurt Fuji apparently was.
Fuji heard but chose not to deem it worthy of a response. "Well I am glad then, in that case." he said, instead, not quite convinced that the other boy was telling the truth
Making a small humming noise Yanagi stood up to go and make another cup of tea, facing the cupboard as he spoke softly. "You can't stay mad at me forever Fuji" He wasn't even sure if the noise could be heard over the kettle, and simply sighed as he started to make another cup.
"True, after all, I forgave Kirihara, in due time. Twice, in fact. But then, I found him a curio to begin with." He picked up the box and made for the door, and then paused. "I guess the long and short of it is that it’s not often that I'm overlooked, Yanagi, particularly in favour of someone else. So the least you could do, would be to have a little grace about it, ne?"
Turning slightly Yanagi watching Fuji for a moment before nodding. "And seen as I wasn't the one who made his decision you can't blame me as much as you want to. Though I'm sorry all this has hurt you in the process. Hopefully one day we can get over this entirely, and if we can say this is at least a little sorted, I promise to never bring it up again. Might even be able to get to know you a little better even maybe?"
Fuji shrugged, "He made the more logical choice. It was just the timing that was bad, is all" He hefted the box in his arms, trying to find a better grip and then nodded once. "Maybe. We'll see." he said. "Have a nice day, Yanagi."
"Hmm" He didn't say anything to that; he didn't know all of the details after all. "We shall" He confirmed, raising his hand a little to wave once. "You too, and good luck with the box. Whatever the surprise is" He smiled faintly before turning back to the tea, quickly making another cup so he could head off to read.
"Oh you'll find out soon enough. Just listen for the hysterical hissy fitting, and my laughter. Ja ne," said Fuji, smiling, and then turned on his heel and left.
Not knowing what to think of that Yanagi just made a mental note to stay away from boxes for a while, especially any related to Fuji. "Of course" He murmured, a little confused as to what it could be before shrugging it off, finishing off the tea and heading off to his own room. He'd decided on a book now at least.
