Nonfiction Rambles

Oct 14, 2008 22:01

I am writing the most ridiculous piece of nonfiction in the history of ridiculous nonfiction pieces. I have no idea what my poor workshop partner is going to think tomorrow. Poor soul.

Honeybunches, I may not be able to show this one to you: you'll probably want to throttle me for my portrayal of us as children. But you must admit, we were KIND OF A ( Read more... )

You have a workshop partner for a nonfiction writing class? :X

Yes indeed. We trade papers and edit/comment on them. Then we have a second workshop where FOUR people trade papers, and then we edit them again, and then we hand them in.

Although my partner today had not finished her paper-- she thought the due date was thursday. So I had nothing to do... and now I'll have to read it later on my own time. Plus! My paper was super embarrassing, especially because it became the only paper being talked about. -__________-

But yeah, workshops. Kinda pretty much like a beta. (except they have no choice heh)

Oh, wow. I would be quite embarrassed if something I wrote was read, edited and critiqued that many times. >_< (especially if it was a true story!!) I also don't take criticism well. Heh heh... Mostly because I'm a beta for my friends (and I'm always right! Mwaha.)

*ahem*

Why was your paper the only one being talked about? :X

Yeah, it can be embarrassing-- especially the first time. But some of the advice is good, and it helps you to look at what's missing in your paper, or what's awkward/not working. I think that's something that's really hard to notice in your own writing. A different, more objective point of view is often much appreciated. ^_______^ (*laugh* I would LOVE to always be right. I always get sooo embarrassed when I muck up).

Oooh my paper was the only one being discussed because... she didn't have one. XD

*love*

Yeah, I know you're right. I just hate being wrong and embarrassed. Haha. I always make my sister and my mom read over my papers before I turn them in, just incase I miss something, then put it aside to read later and find more mistakes.

Ooooh, the only one being discussed between you and your partner? I assumed the whole class. :X

Yeah, come into my room around 1AM to have me read a several page essay. Uncool when you're half-asleep.

Sharing a piece of writing or a piece of art is always nerve wracking. It's like sharing a piece of your soul, and it makes you nervous how the other person responds to it. I've always hated the sharing part of writing workshops.

I know, sharing writing can be so agonizing. Especially nonfiction because it is ACTUALLY about you, and is something that actually happened. It brings a whole new level of personal/possessiveness to the writing.

And also because... writing really can be very subjective. GAH. Such torture

Heh, I actually find I write wonderfully from about 12pm-1am. But by 2am you had better believe my brain has vacated the premises and gone to bed with or without my body.

Haha, that getting your sister/mother to look over your paper is a smart thing. I find I ALWAYS miss typos and errors on the computer no matter how many times I proof read. And then the moment I print it out on paper it's like SHIT.

For example, this most recent paper... I glanced down at the first page and scanned it to find that instead of writing "sprinting" I had typoed with "springing." *laugh*

Oh yes, as for embarrassment, there's a line from the book I'm currently reading that sums it up pretty nicely: "Humiliation is a thign never forgotten." Whyyyy is it that the most mortifying things tend to stick with us for so long?

Seems like you have another typo here. Haha. "...thign never..."

I do stupid things as well. I print at least three copies of a paper from editing it. Last mistake I made was writing "wither" which I then changed to "whether"... but when reading aloud to my English lass, realized I actually wanted the word "either". It was a silly mistake that my sister asked if I meant a word, and I wasn't paying much attention (probably 3 in the morning or something), so I said yes. xx;

When I was younger, I spelled my own last name incorrectly on a poem that eventualy got hung up in the school. The teacher showed my parents at back-to-school night, and they were like, hm, she spelled her name wrong. xD;

Silly, silly.

-__________- How embarrassing. Terrible typos. It's because I was using a 6inch keyboard I think. ^^;;

Hahahahaha, oh, that word mix up of yours is funny. But why does English have to be so finicky??

And I totally used to spell my last name wrong, too. Allll the time. -_____-

I just noticed I spelled "class" incorrectly. xD;

Is your last name...that...difficult? xD;

Oooh I am late to reply. Crazy weekends are not long enough! You know what? The work week should be two days, and the weekend five days. That would be much better.

And no *laugh* my last name is not difficult to spell at all. It's pretty generic. Like spelling Smith wrong. -_______-

Our last name is pronounced how it's spelled, and still people add letters to it when they say it. And that's why I've spelled our last name wrong, too. And like my sister, it was during American Education Week, so my parents got to see it. How embarrassing. But on the other hand, it's helpful when people on the phone pronounce our name wrong, because that's how we screen our calls. ^_^
