Premoving stress

We move in a little over three weeks. The plan is to keep last minute packing to an absolute minimum, so we started packing a couple weeks ago. We're about a third packed, I think ( Read more... )

if it's small stuff (letters/photos etc) then get a packing crate, label it 'memories' or something and dump everything in there.

if it's bigger stuff...ask yourself if a. you really need it and b. you really need to keep a reminder of [person] and [time]

(i;m not sentimental so i dont tend to keep non-letter/non-plushie objects)

You actually move in more like two and a half weeks. But never mind that. :-)

I don't know how to deal with those souvenirs. A lot of the little ones I have kept, but many of the bigger ones I've gotten rid of over the last ten years. I tend to keep a lot of photos and get rid of a lot of other stuff, like t-shirts from contests I went to in the early '90s, say. But I do still have this photomosaic t-shirt, somewhere, say. I think that when we move in a few years, it'll be quite a challenge, especially since there won't be a "catch-all" basement.

*nods* Yeah. I know what you're talking about.

One thing you didn't say is that you *need* to get rid of the mementos right now- can some of the decisions be made in a few months down the road? After the stress of the move's over?

I've been reading unclutterer since I started cleaning out my Stuff Closet this spring. She recommends digitizing or photographing things, and tossing the originals, if they're not precious enough to have a permanent display place. (I've not gotten around to finishing that, but I've started scanning photos, at least).

Anyway, taking photos of things and tossing them has been sort of liberating, for minor keepsakes.

Completely agree with this approach--I'm all over the "bits, not stuff" approach to life.

Ah, I re-read your post, and understand what you mean about not wanting to ask people to help you move it.

If it makes you feel any better, I think *everybody* moves with more junk than they want to.

I'd still say move the extra boxes. It might be different after a few moves- after all we're not talking cancelled checks from the 1960s like a certain set of parents. :)

Or huge piles of New Yorkers, like a different set. (But those are mostly gone, right?)
