Humans are more than capable of acting as bad or worse than the 'monsters' that they despise. I'm sure you're aware of that, though.

I can't see that necessarily being the case. Ideals are difficult to forget, regardless of circumstance. If circumstance was always truly capable of teaching people, the world would be a very different place - or, humanity would, at least. Despite atrocities committed throughout our past, it's clung to that we are somehow better than our mistakes.
