How's it going everybody?

(2) Nerdy Hobbies

Whale Watching- I am a biology major, and my obsession is whales. I love these creatures, they amaze me! I'm lucky that my hometown is on Cape Cod, MA, where there is whale watching almost all year. On average I tend to go on about 40 watches a summer and keep a catalog book on what species I see and different characteristics about them. I've also volunteered with the whale detanglement rescue team in my hometown.

Electronica composition- Otherwise known as I make techno music. I own Fruity Loops beat program and have been attempting to create my own tracks. I'm hoping at some point in the future to create a track onto vinyl and have all my dj friends spin it at their parties. :C)

Figure Skating- I have been skating since I was five (I'm twenty-one now) and at my peak I was at the junior competing level and made it to Nationals twice. If it wasn't for my passion for biology and the fact that I've injured myself I probably would still be in the ice rink 30 hours a week. I know this may sound like repetition of other members, but I do take physics into consideration when I attempt to jump and spin. I determine what position of my body would be ideal for attaining maximum height and velocity and then, if it doesn't work, try to figure out how to alter my hypothesis.

Reading- I adore reading, and it frustrates me to no end that I can't pleasure read with my hectic schedule. I'm pretty much into all types of books. Some various titles on my shelf: The Prophet, Poisonwood Bible, Perks of Being a Wallflower, A Stranger in the House of Love, Music and 20th Century Technology. I must say my favorite author is Kahlil Gibran. His words are incredibly beautiful and make you think.

(3) Academic History
I hated the fact that I attended such a small high school (graduated with 42 other students, and there was 250 students in the ENTIRE PUBLIC high school) because I had no access to AP courses. The only one I took was Environmental Science and it was a satellite course though the University of New Hampshire.

AP Environmental Studies- A in the class and a 4 on the exam

My favorite classes in high school were definitely biology and english.

SATs
Verbal 710
Math 570 (I know, I suck)
Total 1280

SAT II
Chemistry 620
Biology 710

Overall GPA in high school was 3.812
Graduated 4th in my class (of 43! Woo!)

I'm currently a junior at the University of Puget Sound (yes, along with the famous dancingdrew) and holding a steady 3.0 GPA. I'm a biology major with emphasis on marine behavioral ecology. I know my GPA isn't that impressive, but my quick explanation for that is a HUGE conflict with a former professor whose teaching skills I did not appreciate.

Oh, and usually near the end of summer and winter breaks, I get really excited for the pending semester. I guess when I'm not in school I get really bored!

(4) Hours on the internet
Oh man, this is embarrassing. Usually when I'm online I'm tinkering around lj and/or checking out whale research websites. I think on a good day I spend around 5-6 hours on the internet.

(5) Nerdy little tidbits
* I have a favorite scientific name and surprise, it's a whale species. Megaptera novaeangliae, the humpback whale, meaning "Large winged creature of New England." I mean come on, that is so cool!

* I try to go a little bit farther in science labs than my lab professors require. For a recent geology lab we were identifying the 360', 350', and 340' topographic contour lines of our campus. I found it so interesting that I stayed later to identify the 370' and 380' lines as well. I've also been known to pull out a microscope when we're dissecting creatures in our vertebrate zoology lab in order to see scales and fur up close.

*I love broadway music, even though all my friends cringe at just the thought of listening to Cats. I own a lot of older broadway, such as Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Les Miserables etc., but have also gotten into the new-er broadway like Miss Saigon and Ragtime.

*I practiced and studied Hinduism for about 6 years of my life. My mother was a devotee since her college years and helped my younger sister and I recite prayers and celebrate holidays. I think it was around middle school that I decided to abstain from religion, however I've recently began to reread the Bhagavad Gita.

*One summer when all my friends were working odd jobs around Cape Cod, I went to the Bahamas to take a Marine Accredited Course.

*On that note, I'm a registered advanced scuba diver and have cataloged over 40 dives. I love being underwater than I do being on land, it's so comforting and AMAZING! I've seen spotted eagle rays the size of a buick, 16' hammerhead sharks, petted large hogfish and have ridden on the fin of a whale shark!

Alright, well I hope that is enough. I enjoy reading your posts all the time!

Peace, Em
