The casting directors realize that Melanie is supposed to be at least half Mexican right?

What? Since when? I've read the book multiple times and I have never gotten that impression. At most she has tan skin, and you can make of that what you will, but that can go many ways...

She's from New Mexico. She has tanned skin, black/dark hair and dark, almond-shaped eyes.

Well, I suppose there could be a possibility of her being Mexican, Latina, Native American, or whatever else fits those characteristics, but it never came across to me that way. Who knows.

I never got that vibe either.

The names of the family- Trev, Linda, Jamie, Sharon, Maggie, and Jeb don't give me the impression that she's Latina either. (NOT that names can't cross cultures.) I assumed her tan skin came from growing up in the south west.

Yeah, same. I'm part Mexican myself so I was alarmed at the thought of maybe missing this little detail from the book, lol.
