One of my wishes is that those dark trees, so old and firm they scarcely show the breeze, were not, as 'twere, the merest mask of gloom, but stretched away unto the edge of doom. To make the individual uncomfortable, that is my task. Very high-energy particles would be generated near the black hole by the in-falling matter. This is the laser whose narrow red beam is used in supermarkets to read bar codes. And as our generation marvels at our new view of the universe---our new way of asserting the world's coherence---we are fulfilling our part, contributing our rung to the human ladder reaching for the stars.
