I was listening to online radio awhile back, when one of the hosts asked why people request Free Bird at concerts, so he played the song, which turned out to be a live version recorded by someone's shitty phone. They turned it off almost immediately, apparently shocked and offended, and then said something like,

"That might've been good back then, but not anymore."
Wait, what?

How about you cut the bullshit, say you don't like the song and would rather listen to sappy pop or watered-down hip hop bullshit and go dancing? You haven't even heard the whole song, so I don't need your base opinion. Who goes dancing, anyway? Nobody dances. I once tried dancing, and promptly asked someone to smash my head in a car door until it got boring for him. Do you think Bruce Lee or Jack Bauer have ever danced? Oh right, back to the radio show: so the host tried showing a little respect to the song, when he's really just a lying shit-slinger. Music doesn't just magically lose appeal. If you acknowledge that it might have been awesome when it came out, then why does it suddenly suck now, you disingenuous curd? That's almost like saying "The Catcher in the Rye" is a real sleeper now compared to stupid magazines. Or The Notebook completely trumps Apocalypse Now.

If you don't like classic rock or older music in general, then just say so. I don't really have a problem with anyone for liking music that I don't. If you like music that makes you dance, fine. Want music that makes you cry? Go for it. Just don't expect me to join you. But why dismiss an entire genre when you've obviously never heard it? My brother jokingly makes fun of me for listening to classic rock so much, but it seems as if some people avoid it like the plague. Why? Have they listened to enough of it to decide it's not for them? Or is there some kind of social stigma associated with listening to old music? If there is one, it doesn't exist. It's not like the potential shame of telling someone you're gay or that you're HIV positive. It's just music. No one other than your brain can tell you what to listen to.

Just FYI: No, I don't like classic rock simply b/c it's old. For example, I don't really like The Beatles. Duran Duran? Gay. Hell, other than Van Halen and some others, I don't really like any typical "'80s music". But a lot of recent stuff from the past 5, maybe 10 years has been lame, lackluster, or way too "pop".

All this writing because some asshole didn't watch what he was saying.
