I read a post on Tumblr about the latest episode of True Blood, and it speculated that perhaps a Glamour was something that runs particularly strong in the Lorena-Bill-Jessica bloodline (and raised that question of whether Pam and Tara could learn to fly, like Eric).
This made me think about the number of times that we've seen Godric, Eric or Pam use Glamour (on someone other than Ginger, who is in a class of her own). And when I had trouble coming up with any, I realised that this was at least part of what made me love them.
See, I don't believe that Lorena, Bill and Jessica are any better at Glamouring than Godric, Eric or Pam; I think that it's nurture, not nature (or blood, what have you), that leads them to use Glamour so casually. Consider that one of the first lessons that Bill taught Jessica was how to Glamour someone, and that he thought this was a lesson more important than how to feed responsibly (i.e. without killing someone), and I think you get a sense of the kind of subconscious values Lorena bestowed upon Bill, and which Bill is unintentionally passing on to Jessica. Namely, that humans exist for their pleasure, to amuse and be manipulated and toyed with.
Most of the time, sure, Bill and Jessica use Glamour to cover their tracks after they feed. But we've also seen Lorena, Bill and Jessica (on Hoyt) use Glamour in ways that are cruel or even - in the case of Lorena and Bill - sadistic. It's that element of casual sadism and cruelty that is absent in Godric and his kin, vicious though they were (and are) at times; and it is precisely this that makes them more trustworthy, and weirdly honourable. As much as Bill has disavowed his maker, the fact is that he will never be entirely out of her influence.
