1. Doctor finally put me on antibiotics a couple of days ago, which cleared the stomach flu right up, so I was finally able to break house arrest today and go watch X-Men: First Class in the cinemas. Banshee got the biggest laughs from the audience I saw it with (I hope the actor returns in the sequel). Charles and Erik are twice as slashy on the big screen. The submarine raising scene still makes me tear up a little. And I am left with the desire to write Emma Frost post-movie fic, where she's hanging around Raven and Erik and being utterly bored by all their angst.

January Jones, btw, I thought was a perfectly adequate Bond villain. I only wished she wouldn't smile so much; it kind of ruins the whole icy, sexpot vibe, and made her seem like a bit of an airhead.

Random First Class trivia: In Erik's hotel room in Switzerland, on his wall map of clues and leads, I noticed a photo of a woman with short dark hair near the photo of the Swiss bank manager (James Faulkner). Even though we never see her in First Class, she was incredibly familiar to me, and for reasons I couldn't quite put my finger on, I had a mental image of her as a fairy or an evil elf. Mental search through likely film candidates turned up nothing, but just now, it finally hit me where I'd seen her. The actress is Katrine De Candole, and she played Perie the Faerie, an ally and lover of Azazeal, played by Michael Fassbender (!), in Hex. IMDB actually has her credited as "Swiss Receptionist" for X-Men: First Class, but I guess her part must have been cut in the final edit.

2. Stopped over at Mecca Myer City before lunch, thinking I would just get a new NARS Bali (my default brow powder, which fell into the bathroom sink and shattered when I was in Ho Chi Minh). My eye, however, was caught by Nouveau Monde (metallic silver lilac paired with rich olive gold), an eyeshadow duo released in the Spring 2011 collection that I've been wanting to try.

NARS Nouveau Monde

I'm an old hand with khaki/olive coloured eyeshadows; it was the cool lilac shade that intrigued me, and I wanted to see if there was a way to pull it off. The resulting look that Amy from Mecca did for me with just the lilac side of the duo (layered over the brown and ecru shades from Portobello and India Song, and then smudged over black pencil on my lower waterline) was unexpectedly awesome. Nouveau Monde, needless to say, came home with me (and so did Mykonos and Cayenne, two cream eyeshadow singles that are great for creating a quick neutral eye with just your fingers when travelling or on the run).

Here is a photo of the look Amy gave me:

The lipstick shade I'm wearing is Guerlain Rouge Automatique in Bal de Mai (so much cheaper duty-free in Vietnam!), and the blush is NARS Sin.

Also bought: a long cable-knit jumper in an oatmeal/beige colour, and a bright, cheerful vintage pink silk shirt with circus designs on it that I can't wait to wear. I'm headed to Shanghai this July, so Summer is not so far off as it seems!

3. Sung Kang (aka Han Leu aka that hot Asian guy in the Fast and the Furious movies) has landed a "key supporting role" in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming movie, about an assassin and a cop who team up to get revenge on some folk blahblah plot is unimportant. Now, I may not whinge about it all that often, but the under-representation (not to mention the continued exoticisation) of Asians in Hollywood films is a subject near and dear to my heart. The casting of Kang in this kind of role, in an action thriller, is rare enough to be worth mentioning. Some blogs are already speculating that he might be taking over the secondary lead role (the cop) which had previously been reported as having gone to Thomas Jane (Hung). I refuse to get my hopes up until more details are available, but I will be watching this one with interest.
