It would be interesting, wouldn't it, to look at the United States' war on drugs and the narcotics trafficking between South and North America, and try to work out the extent that it was the product of the US's role in driving down prices of agricultural exports from the South (eg. sugar, coffee), often to below production cost, since the 1980s. (That's the free market for you. Drugs pay.)

If The Wire had gone on forever, I would have liked to see it reach beyond Baltimore, beyond the US (to Haiti, Mexico), and look at the issue from the source. Weeds has started to do that, but not in any big-picture way, and the Revolutionaries storyline (Celia's kidnapping) was mainly played for laughs.

So, David Simon and Ed Burns, if you ever want to expand your horizons, and look at what's going on parallel to "the death of the working class", here's a topic that might be up your alley. Although the subtitles might be a bit of a drag.
