Well, there have been spoilers that we'll be seeing "a lot" (i.e. nudity) of Eric next season, so I wouldn't be surprised if they kind of merge books 3 and 4 in the next season. However, we need Eric clear-headed (at least at the beginning) to introduce Sookie to Alcide and direct her to the Mississippi vamps.

Considering the book-canon squishing they've done before, they don't necessarily need Eric clear headed, but I imagine you're right. I mean, with Bill disappeared (presumably for the book 3 exploits w/ his maker), who else *could* Sookie go to for help other than Eric?
In the fourth book (and, depending on how Ball chooses to adapt them, either season 3 or season 4), Eric is hit by a spell that causes him to lose his memory of his life as a vampire.
