Profile of Australian director John Hillcoat (The Proposition; the upcoming The Road). At Quiet Earth there is also a review of Joe Penhall's (Enduring Love) adapted screenplay of The Road, which is based on the Pulitzer Price winning novel by Cormac McCarthy. [imdb]

I think it was blackcurrant who I was complaining to about the lack of a female presence in The Road (and also, for that matter, No Country for Old Men). My issue basically comes down to this: the single female character in the book, when confronted with awful reality, with human nature stripped bare, decides that she cannot face it. The Man and his Son represent hope, rebirth, endurance. The women, in this allegory, are not survivors; they have no place, not even as nurturers. They are innocents who have to be sheltered by civilisation like hot-house flowers, and when that becomes impossible, they lose strength and die. So I find it interesting that the role of the mother in the story, who is played by Charlize Theron, is going to be slightly expanded from the novel. The script review says this about it:
'I slightly question how Penhall has written one aspect of her character but, in the interest remaining somewhat spoiler free, I'll not get into specifics. Suffice it to say her character does something very strange and she seems a little too worldly in one scene. That's all I'll say on the subject.'
Worldly? As opposed to, well, lame? I'd say that was a change for the better.
