I didn't like the flag much to begin with either, but then I sort of settled into accepting it as a way of suggesting renewed emphasis on patriotism after the attack on home soil.

the show's still part of the Spooks universe -- and he's totally fated for a Tom or Adam-style breakdown.

See, I was thinking that Charlie might be more of a Harry Pearce in the making. The interesting thing about Charlie is that he's been forced into this situation where he has to be slightly detached from his team, when he is also the one with the least field experience. The others probably think he's a bit ivory-tower, and he kind of is. But he's also the one who'll be sending them into calculated danger - bit of that cool headed ruthlessness, like you said.

Wasn't it also suggested that Charlie was recruited semi-against-his-will? MI5 going after him, and not the other way around? It's almost as if he's been groomed for this.

Maybe Code 9 will get axed after one season and we'll never have to see Charlie's fall. Or maybe Rob will incapacitate him out of jealousy over Rachel first. :)

On the other hand, he's pretty much the main character in a Spooks universe, which makes me fear for his safety.

Yes, but I wonder how much of that is intentional when it's obviously meant to be an ensemble series. He comes across to me as the strongest character, the one with the most interesting journey, of learning and transformation. Even though Jez was the character having the huge crisis in the last episode, it all came back to Charlie in the end, when he fired the bullet that killed the girl.

Off topic, when Kylie chased the teenage assassin over rooftops I was scratching my head: Should she be doing that when she's slowly dying of radiation poisoning?

I really hope they don't give the terminal case the cliched death-by-self-sacrifice.

io9 thought Charlie was the best thing about it too. I think I knew he was supposed to stand out when he basically stole the closure to Jez's plotline with his informant. That was his defining moment for me. (And it made me kind of sorry for Jez, for the first time.)

I was expecting them to reveal that Kylie's red bob was a wig in the pilot (maybe during the tussle in the nightclub). That would have been cool. *sigh*
