Drabble: Matins (Wanted; Fox/Cross)

Jul 04, 2008 16:12

The idea came from an old story by orange_crushed called "The River" (here at the pit of voles). Spoilers for the movie, Wanted.

Fox and Cross. PG. There is an afterlife.

It's fall and dusk.
And no one is walking
along the road.

Matins

I did not do it for you, so don't look at me like that.

The road has been long and I am thirsty. I have been through many fires to arrive at this consummation.

A human body retains its most basic shape after death, for a while; perhaps the spirit is the same. And you are the dry words of your midnight prayers and the sheafs of rules you lived by. The light, the fire, is peril to your frame.

In order not to dissolve, your spirit must be constantly reinstated.

There is a space above the cooling ashes of my heart for you to write your secret name, the true name that fate gave you. To mark each night in blood or ink, your thumb erasing it by morning, for as long as this body - the skin on this smoke-like body - is mine.
