Pattern Recognition

I was sitting up in bed last night, rewatching on my laptop Peter Weir's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - rediscovering the elation of the music, the beginning and ending shots from the sky looking down over the Surprise, Max Pirkis' character Lord Blakeney, Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany going through their already perfected doubles act, Bettany swordfighting, all the historical details, David Threlfall's foultempered ship's cook. It's one of those movies I keep forgetting how much I actually love and admire, until I watch it again.

If only Weir's adaptation of William Gibson's Pattern Recognition was still going ahead... He's been attached since 2004, I believe, but Gibson himself expressed the opinion last May that he didn't think Weir was going to make it any more and I haven't heard any word to contradict that yet. *sigh* With the snoozeworthy Hayden Christensen as Case in the upcoming adaptation of Neuromancer, it may be some time yet before a good film based on a William Gibson novel is ever made.

Edit: But it's not all bad news! There's unofficial word (from Thomas Dekker) that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles will be back this fall for a second season! (Watch with Kristin via TV Squad)
