Fic: Until (Moonlight; Josef)

You know, if they ever decide to make a film version of Terry Pratchett's "Guards, Guards!", Jason Dohring has the perfect-shaped torso to play Corporal Carrot Ironfoundersson. *g*

Spoilers for 1.10 "Sleeping Beauty". And yes, I know the locket in the episode was gold, but why let that stand in the way of a story?

Josef, Coraline and Sara, 1955. PG. What keeps him going is habit and hope.

... Illusion activist,
I broke belief in it, and now I want
Nothing, the darling or the fraudulent.
Stilled beat, be easy; nothingness annuls
Pity.

- Giacomo Leopardi, 'To Himself' (trans. Douglas Dunn)

Until

There are so many things you want to ask her:

What name did you give on the marriage certificate? What does it mean - 'Til death do us part - for creatures like us? Weren't you afraid of losing him?

You should know better than to expect helpful answers from Coraline.

You can try to run from it, Josef, she says, in her slow, exasperatingly patient way, the sound of her phone voice scratchy across the long distance:

But some things are meant to be. Don't you ever just want to not be alone?

*

It very nearly ended, so many times. So many ways you might never have met Sara. The closest call was in 1842: six silver bullets in the chest, leg and face. You had them dug out, the would-be vampire hunters ripped apart by dogs.

Now you toss the thin velvet pouch toward the artisan; the chunks of poison that almost killed you are inside, your dried blood still etched into their grooves.

Melt them down, you order him.

*

It isn't Charles, it's Josef, you tell Sara as you give her the silver locket on its white gold chain, slipping off your gloves to fix it around her throat. Where finger touches metal, your skin for a moment turns black.

Your heart, your death, your life. All in her hands.

Josef, she breaths, upturned face full of wonder and light.
