I get strong synesthesia from gunpowder as well (to the sound of fireworks or Chinese firecrackers), so the idea came from that. :)

The first thing I thought when I watched that scene where he passes his hand slowly over that wall - it was snakelike, so languid but full of controlled tension. That must be how he approaches the world all the time.
