Could a man's voice sing Portishead's "Glory Box" and do it justice? John Martyn has, and his cover of the song is sublimely cinematic - the evocative noir vistas practically film themselves. While I'm at it, here are "Solid Air" and "You Don't Know What Love Is", both also by John Martyn.

I saw Resident Evil: Extinction over the weekend and was bummed by how little Milla/Ali, Milla/Oded, or even Milla/Milla there was in it. C'mon Paul W.S. Anderson, you need to give out a little something to make up for the lack of anything that passes for a climax. The cute tech-guy (Christopher Egan) with the Australian accent only goes so far.

Dan Stevens, who was Nick Guest in the miniseries The Line of Beauty, is attached to play the lead role of Erast Fandorin in Azazel. The film is a detective mystery based on Boris Akunin's book, "The Winter Queen", and set in 19th century Russia. The cast also includes Milla Jovovich. It is being directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Gerard Soeteman, the team behind the war thriller Black Book. [imdb]

David Simon, creator of HBO's The Wire, hopes to make his next project for HBO a series about musicians in post-Katrina New Orleans:
"This show will be a way of making a visual argument that cities matter," Simon said. "'The Wire' has never done that. I certainly never said or wanted to say that Baltimore is not saving, or that it can't be saved. But I think some people watching the show think, Why don't they just move away?"

A goal of the show will be to celebrate the glories of an American city, and "why we need to accept ourselves as an urban people," Simon said.

"At the Macy's parade, when they show New York, they gotta get the dancers from Broadway shows out in the streets doing a kick line," he said. "In New Orleans the musicians are already in the streets."

But Ember's once powerful generator is failing...and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker. Now, two teenagers in a race against time, must search Ember for clues that will unlock the ancient mystery of the city's existence and help the citizens escape before the lights go out forever. Based on the novel by Jeanne Duprau. [imdb]

Edit: bantha_fodder wants to know if you'd be interested in a Chinese New Year-themed fanfiction community/ficathon.
