"Truth matters, otherwise we're no better than animals."

The Showtime website is now accessible from countries other than the USA! When did that happen? HOW AWESOME. Now I can finally read the pages for Dexter and Meadowlands.

I'm really liking Meadowlands, by the way. A bit slow to get into - like Paul Levinson said, it doesn't have much of a plot, per se - but the characters are wonderful. I'm particularly fond of the twins, Mark and Zoe.

And in episodes 4 and 5, we find out much about the enigmatic Tom Tyrell that make me love him as well. Scot Williams plays Tom with a not-at-all realistic American accent (which I notice tends to soften a British actor's speech; just listen to Hugh Laurie in the first season of House) and in Tom's case, I think the phoniness of it actually adds to the intrigue of his character. Tom, before entering witness protection and coming to Meadowlands, was a Pulitzer Prize winning, left wing journalist. When an international prostitution ring he was investigating made an attempt on his life with a car bomb, they killed his wife instead. The same obsessive single-mindedness he devoted to finding out the truth, Tom now turns to golf.

"On the fairway, no feelings," he instructs Zoe. Feelings get in the way. "Piss off," she tells him back, "you can't live your life on a golf course."

History repeats itself when Zoe enlists his help in finding out who killed handyman Jack Donnelly, and why there was a cover-up. The ever-cheerful Freddie, Meadowland's resident "Personal Trainer" (who has to be the tough winner in the Creepiest Character on the Show category), intercedes, telling Tom to back off the case. When the two investigators fail to do so, Zoe's life is threatened in a deliberate reinactment of the way Tom's wife had died.

Tom gets the message. By the end of episode 5, he's back on the golf course with Freddie. While we wonder how much is now just an act. How long can the impassioned believer in truth be kept opiated? Especially when he knows, or at least strongly suspects, that Danny did indeed kill Jack.
