Diamond monopoly De Beers has begun an £8m campaign to counter the predicted negative publicity resulting from the upcoming film, Blood Diamond, about the trade in illicit African "conflict diamonds". The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou, and is directed by Edward Zwick. You can judge DiCaprio's South African accent and watch the trailer in flash format

English actor John Hurt has signed on as the lead in The Oxford Murders, an adaptation of an award winning
novel by Argentinean writer Guillermo Martinez about mathematics and a murder mystery (reviewed
here at the Guardian). "Hurt will play an Oxford University professor & logician embroiled in the investigation of a series of murders seemingly linked by mathematical symbols. The first victim being an elderly woman who helped crack the Enigma Code during World War II, and as further bodies pile up more symbols are revealed. The logician teams up with a young Argentine graduate to solve the riddle." More The Name of the Rose than The Da Vinci Code, one suspects (and hopes). (
