Just watched a television interview/profile on the writings and views of Philip Pullman, author of "His Dark Materials". I've always been rather put off by the books because of their ugly, childish cover art, but after listening to Pullman speak about his work, I'm certainly very interested now to read them. He pits himself morally, religiously opposite to C. S. Lewis; his moral arguments with the Narnia books are a bit hysterical, but generally not unfounded. Pullman is as much an apologist for anti-authoritarianism and anti-religious enlightenment as Lewis was for Protestantism (how well he succeeds, I'll have to see). One thing he said made me bounce a little on my sofa, it was something along the lines of: Jesus doesn't feature in his books, but he does have a place in Pullman's mythology as a speaker of great wisdom who learnt from the Rebel Angels, and whose teachings were greatly besmirched and erased by the Church that came after him.
That's quite something to be hearing the day before Christmas. *g*
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY! *hugs all 'round*
