  • Alatriste
Spanish novelist Arturo Perez-Reverte's beautiful and strange "The Club Dumas" was turned into a ghastly film (The Ninth Gate) by Roman Polanski. Maybe the Spanish can get it right though, in their adaptation of another of his books, Alatriste. Set in 17th century Spain, and staring Viggo Mortensen as soldier-turned-mercenary Captain Alatriste, it is expected to be released in Spain in October 2006.

The story takes place in the 17th century imperial Spain under the reign of Philip IV, a weak and easily manipulated monarch dominated by a corrupt court. Intrigue and betrayal, duels and battles, love and hatred are the stage for the adventures of "Captain Alatriste". In His Majesty's service, a proud soldier in Flanders and in times of peace, a hired sword in Madrid and Seville. He wasn't the most virtuous of men, nor the most devout, but he was a man of valour. His name was Diego Alatriste! [FT1 International]

Tristram Shandy, which has been compared by many (including me) to Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation, has already been screened at numerous festivals with critical success, and is going to be released in the UK in January 2006. There are a couple of reviews over at Twitch and The London Times.
