The last time I saw a full-length John Mayer set was two years ago. It was a private show at the Bowery Ballroom, primarily sponsored by Rolling Stone magazine, and also sponsored by Heineken, Axe Body Spray, and some energy drink.
Last week, a good friend of mine pointed out a ticket sale going on for Mayer's CD Release show at Webster Hall. Of course, $50 and some phone calls later, I got a ticket. And so I went last Wednesday.
John Mayer with a dynamic 1.5 hour set, going through all the songs from his latest album, Continuum, along with some singles from his other two albums. All the songs he performed that are on his latest album had a simple formula, lyrical substance and a smooth intensity with skilled guitar playing in the middle. And for this performance, he had David Ryan Harris back him up on vocals...
And even though Mayer brought out his MANY guitar faces, he seemed happy to be performing all throughout the set, especially when he stepped on one of his MANY guitar effects pedals to break out in to a guitar solo...
