Will Hoge, that's who. Away from the hustle and bustle of the scene in Manhattan, Will Hoge set up shop in Park Slope, the neighborhood in Brooklyn I grew up in when I was Baby Riz. And he rocked the house, despite the fact there wasn't that much of a crowd (I guess they're all used to the thing about musicians only playing in Manhattan).
The Trews from Canada came out with such an explosive opening set. And it's been a LONG while since I've heard a band come out with such good music for an opening set, so it was a real breath of fresh air listening to The Trews play.
Colin MacDonald on lead vocal for The Trews
Left: Jack Syperek on bass. Right: John-Angus MacDonald on lead guitar.
Soon after their set, Will Hoge came out and brought out a highly intensive, highly explosive set from start to finish, playing songs from his current album "The Man Who Killed Love" and from his past material.
Oh yeah, and there were these two ladies who put me to shame when it comes to rocking out to live musicians. They were practically dancing the entire night to every song, fast or slow, edgy or gentle. I give these two props.
And there's a part during "Pocket Full of Change" where the band sings with Will where the lyrics talk about why they ain't on the radio: "Because the man in Hollywood/Says that we ain't any good/And won't give us any money/'Cause we play and talk funny"
Seriously, if you haven't seen Will Hoge yet, you need to see him ASAP. An amazing musician, an amazing person.

--Don't eat at the Italian restaurant that's next to Southpaw. Their pasta dishes look and taste like Gerber baby food. No jokes!
--Caught up w/ Siggi the drummer and Jordan the sound mixer. Good to know they're keeping busy while Aslyn is getting her second album together.
--Oh yeah, I took a pic w/ Will again. But he didn't wear The Red Hat this time around:
