Where I grew up there was a fairly large Jewish community. It wasn't quite Golders Green and definitely wasn't orthodox. When we were at school it wa just one of those things that you knew about people. We all went to Joanna's bat mitzvah and understood that the nine candles in the window were for Hanukkah not Christmas.
As far as I was aware none of the Jewish girls I went to school with were particularly religious. None of them ever talked about moving away. So why is it that when I look at Friends Reunited a number of them have emigrated to Israel? Oh and the one guy who I knew from that community has also emigrated too.
I guess that a lot of this is generational. They say that grandchildren are more interested in their grandparents history than their parents were. I never talked to any of these people about their family history and I don't remember it ever being talked about.
I wonder how radicalised some of them are now. Whether they have lost friends and families in assaults, whether they've been involved in retaliation.
Israel scares the wits out of me, but I'm not so sure about Israelis.
