When he heard his name, Richie Foley’s head shot up. His eyes darted around looking for who had called him. “Up here!” Richie looked up to the second floor walkway of the mall and grinned. Virgil was waving at him and smiling as if he’d just won the lottery.
“What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be on some family vacation?”
“We had to come back early,” Virgil called. “Toss me one of those gummy bears, and I’ll tell you about it.” Richie rolled his eyes but reached into the pack. He plucked out a green bear -they were Virgil’s favorites- and threw it up. The other teen caught it deftly and put it in his mouth. Then he began his tale, “First-”
“Hey,” someone grabbed Richie’s arm and turned him around, “did you just throw something?” The owner of the angry, questioning voice was a grisly, old security guard.
“It was just a-” Richie started.
“I don’t care what it was! No throwing things in the mall! You’re coming with me,” with that the old man drug Richie by the arm to the security center.
He was pushed inside the cramped cell, for lack of a better word, and told to sit. After what seemed like a sufficient amount of time, Richie asked, “How long are you gonna keep me here?”
“For as long as I think you need to be kept,” was the only reply. Richie sighed and sat back. Richie waited. And waited. And waited.
After nearly an hour, Richie was frustrated. “C’mon! It was just a gummy bear.” A few minutes later the old guard let him go, but not without words of warning.
Richie found Virgil in the food court easily enough and smacked the back of his head. “Ow! What was that for?” Richie directed his best glare towards Virgil.
“I just spent the last hour in mall jail because of you.”
“Hey, it’s not my fault you decided to throw something in front of a mall cop.”
Richie plopped down next to his best friend, “Get this. When he let me out, he said that if I messed up one more time he’d kick both of us out of the mall.”
“Both of us? How’s he gonna kick me out just ‘cause you mess up? That’s not fair!”
“Thing is, V, I don’t think he cares.”
“Man, that’s messed up,” Virgil whined. “But I can’t wait to see the look on Pops’ face when he finds out you got put in mall jail.” It didn’t take long for Richie to join Virgil’s laughing.
