Title: Lie

Lie
Richie hadn’t told anyone about their secret meetings in alleys, or their hushed rendezvous at midnight. Richie was clever in how he hid them from everyone, including Virgil. Virgil had noticed something was different about Richie, but it was nothing drastic, and didn’t concern him much.
Richie masked the emotions he was feeling, but the thrill of it kept him on his toes for months. He had no plans for their future, and neither did she. But sometimes he thought there were moments when everything fell into place, and every piece of the puzzle fit and the answer was and always would be them. Moments, however, were only moments; and the instants shattered once their eyes pulled away.
It was exhilarating to be with her, to coast past the law and do whatever they wanted, no matter how crazy. The two were always on the edge of being caught, only just holding back before the plunge.
But they couldn’t go on at this pace, and Richie had a decision to make. They met for the last time in the dark shadow of an alleyway, adorned with graffiti and littered with cigarette butts and broken bottles. It was lit only by a single, dingy moonbeam that had worked its way past iron and brick to shed a little light on a gloomy past.
They were barely an inch apart now, and Madelyn, who reached Richie's chin, had to look up. His blue eyes were familiar and safe.
“You know I can’t,” He murmured painfully, shifting his gaze.
“Then don’t,” She said. She paused and hesitantly placed her hand on his cheek. “Lie to me.”
He lowered his head and she closed her eyes, parted her lips...
“I love you,” He whispered.
And left.
