My Weekend At The Airport

Oct 30, 2005 21:15

Sorry about the complete lack of prior notice, but I wanted to surprise my Rocky and Watterson friends, so only Cora and my parents knew I was flying home this weekend.
I took three planes each way. SBP-LAX-DFW-CMH, and back again. Flying out of San Luis Obispo is a lot like Ron White's bit about his trip from Beaumont to Huston. But the rest of my trip over here was fine. Cora was supposed to pick me up from the airport, but she had gotten to the Bed and Breakfast for her HP Ohio Halloween party late, and her friend Jen was in the area, so she went to pick me up instead. You should have seen the confused look on my face when I got off the plane looking for Cora, and there was this vaguely familiar blonde girl waving at me and calling my name. Jen had to drive back to campus to buy more alcohol and pick some stuff up at her house, and I needed to pick up some White Castle for Cora and myself. It was nice to be back in the old neighborhood, but as time wore on I was getting increasingly frustrated at not being at the Hanover House B&B with Cora, as was the plan. I do love White Castle, but the references in the previous few entries were actually code for sex. So finally we headed out to Newark for the party, and of course we got pulled over AND lost. Finally, at about 2:00 AM Saturday morning, Cora and I laid eyes on each other for the first time in 50 days, 21 hours. Well, not exactly. I barged into the place rather abruptly, walking briskly from room to room like a SWAT officer hunting down a fugitive. Cora saw me before I saw her. Actually I didn't see her. I heard an incredible shriek and maybe a quarter of a second later, was nearly knocked over by a red-headed missile. We ran upstairs and did not emerge again for a couple hours. We went downstairs, where everyone was hanging out in the hot tub. As soon as we walked in, all the other guests burst out in applause, which was both sweet and kind of weird at the same time. We hung out in the tub for a while. Then it was time for bed. In the morning I had to get to an ATM to get money to chip in for the party, and Cora had to drive me into town so I could get to the bank before noon. She nudged me awake without telling me what time it was, and I didn't find out until after I had come back from the ATM and sat down to breakfast that she had managed to get me out of bed at 8:30 on a Saturday morning, which is a pretty incredible feat. She got dropped me off at home in plenty of time for me to go to the bank to close my account. It was nice to be driving the Black Beauty again. Dad and I went for a long bike ride, during which he told me that I might inherit my Grandfather's Buick. It's much newer and has far fewer issues than my car, so as long as the Volvo can stay with Dad, I may decide to take the Buick to California instead if I get it. But there's no way in hell I'm selling the Black Beauty. Not to make room for a Buick Century, and not at the expense of my relationship, which started out and blossomed in that car. Cora's even more attached to it than I am. She even gets happy when she sees a Volvo, any Volvo, on the street.
After the ride, Mom, Dad, and I had lunch at City Barbecue and then went out to see Grandma. That was when I started to feel my sleep deprivation. I went home and took a nap until about 6:30. I got up, showered, and then Mom, Dad, Cora and I all went to Alladin's for dinner. It was one of the best (only) family meals in recent memory. Cora and I got in my car and we went to look at hotel rooms. As luck would have it, we found a good one at the first place we looked, the Clarion the Continent. We put our stuff in the room, got sidetracked, grabbed our costumes and went to pick up David and Melody to go to Rocky. Their reactions were the first of many to my return to Columbus. It was a monsterous affair, with a sold-out audience, lots of extra pre-show activities, and a raffle. The evening had its ups and downs, but it ended joyously at Hounddog's where Cora and I split a chicken pizza. Then we went back to the hotel. We had to leave early in the morning, so we just decided to stay up the whole night playing board games and stuff. I drove us back to the house, Cora moved our stuff to her car, and I put the keys to the house and car back inside. Dad was already up, so I said goodbye to him, and Cora took me to the airport. We sat by the food court and held each other until I absolutely had to get in line or miss my plane. They actually paged me just as I was on my way to the gate. My flight from Columbus to Dallas was with the same guy on the loudspeaker as Friday. He was funny. This time I slept from the moment I sat down to the moment we landed both to Dallas and to Los Angeles. I had a 3-hour wait in LA for my flight to SLO. I wandered around the terminal, looking at the shops and things. When I finally sat down at the gate, I found out that the flight was overbooked. I figured, what the hell. It was only about an hour until the next one, and I had no pressing matters in San Luis Obispo tonight. So I now have a $150 travel voucher to use for one of my future flights. So now I'm back in Cali, ready for 3 more weeks of school until my next visit.
