The Big Bang Theory 2.10 - 2.11
I have two things to say about the two most recent episodes of The Big Bang Theory!
1) Bleh Leonard/Penny! I suppose that with the "Christmas" theme, we had to get back to the Leonard/Penny story. Annnnd so it was a return to season 1 "form," you know, with that whole "nice guy" schtick that Memlu has talked about at some length. And what was especially frustrating in this particular pair of episodes was that in 2.10, Penny kept telling Leonard that it was okay for him to share his feelings and not be only concerned for the woman's feelings, something that made Leonard have to pause and rethink his whole life. The irony or hypocrisy of that is that we're not really supposed to really care about Penny's feelings about Leonard. And then 2.11, Penny is upset about how her boyfriend turned out to be a married man; in contrast, Leonard was selfishly fixated on the fact that the boyfriend had been taking nude photos of her, and then proceeded to pretend to care about how this had hurt Penny. Meanwhile we're supposed to be laughing AND also not caring about Penny's feelings AND also not caring that technically Leonard/Stephanie hasn't been resolved so Leonard is being inappropriate AND also believing that Leonard is focused on the woman's feelings rather than his own. Frustrating! If there's one "rule of shipping" for me, it's almost always that I tend to ship something based on the female character's feelings, not so much the guy's. But beyond that, the ship is just poorly done and stereotypical Nice Guy shipping and there's not really any actual chemistry there.
2) Yay Sheldon + Penny BFFs! On a much, much more positive note, 2.11 is full of reasons why Sheldon is my absolute favorite character in the show, and also why the Sheldon + Penny friendship arc is vastly more entertaining than the Leonard/Penny "romance." One of the reasons why Season 2 is so much better than Season 1 is that it's almost like the Sheldon + Penny story is the most prominant relationship in the show! It's just so hilarious and endearing and awesome!
