Epic Love, Epic War: Confessions on the Cusp of Invasion

Introduction

You might wonder why I'm using an icon from The Office in a journal entry all about Avatar. Well, read on.

"The Day of Black Sun" is capital "E" "Epic." I mean... WOW, right?! The most epic episode prior to this was "Siege of the North." And somehow, "The Day of Black Sun" is even more epic than that.

"Day of Black Sun" takes everything ( Read more... )

All right, I've gone over this delightful little essay a couple more times, and I think I can make a few more specific comments. For instance, when you list the times when the Oma/Shu leitmotif is played, you missed one. It was in The Earth King when Aang is about to confess to Katara and is swiftly interrupted by Sokka. I don't hold it against you that you missed this one, since the music only played for a very brief period of time.

Second of all, I just love all the body language that you identified in Katara's confession, and the way this clearly communicates the subtext of the scene the way a straight read would miss completely. Also, I can't get over Katara holding her kissing face well after Aang has ceased the kiss. She was just so into it, you know? Of course you know, you're the one who wrote the essay.

Third, looking at the screencaps in which Aang is crying, he somehow seems so much older then twelve years old. There's just something about the structure of his face now that just makes him seem so much more mature now, as well he should seeing as he's fighting a war to save the world and his very own lady love.

So, that's what I have to say, hope that it was worth reading.

I think you're the only one who's referred to this as "little," cy. ;) ;)

Oooooh, most excellent! I was wondering if I was forgetting any instances. *Runs off to add it*

I'm very glad they showed that body language. It helps tremendously!

Also, I can't get over Katara holding her kissing face well after Aang has ceased the kiss. She was just so into it, you know?

Me too! In fact, I-I still haven't gotten over like any of it at all?

There's just something about the structure of his face now that just makes him seem so much more mature now

Rawles reported what her brother (who is an artist) had to say about how they changed his facial structure to show him as older, but I forget what those details were!

So, that's what I have to say, hope that it was worth reading

Definitely! Thanks, cy!

Looking at it myself, it can be hard to tell because of inconsistency in animation, BUT it looks as though they gave his cheeks and jaw more definition (jutted out his jaw in particular), his neck longer (I think), and a more rectangular (less roundish) head. They also made him taller and his eyes aren't as proportionally big in comparison to his head.

I can definetly attest to the longer neck thing. Because in "The Runaway", when Sokka is outlining his plan to get Toph and Katara to make up and Aang is attentively listening, his neck must have been like, really long. But yes, I look at the screencaps at the end, and I can definetly see everything that you've outlined. Thanks.
