I Do Not Approve of: Anti-Choice Activists

Jul 06, 2008 15:16

Last Monday there was some news in The Oregonian about a man intending to build a Planned Parenthood in North Portland, Oregon.

One of the contractors backed out of building it because anti-choice activists in that area are said to be very pretty dangerous, and have been known to stalk the households of contractors. However, Planned Parenthood will continue to be built, and will bring an estimate 140 jobs into the neighborhood.

"They're up in North Portland targeting young black girls to get them into a life of sex," said Diss, a science teacher at Portland's Benson High.

...I like Planned Parenthood. I like it because they're making great efforts to bring sexual education to today's youth (aka me and my peers), so that we can make informed decisions, rather than succumb to the frustration that comes when all you get is, "Sex is bad and you should wait until you're married."

According to Jessica Valenti, author of Full Frontal Feminism as well as the blog Feministing, the government is shelling out roughly $178 million a YEAR to give girls false information about why abstinence is the only safe choice. All that money to tell preteen girls that condoms and birth control is all a joke and that it doesn't work, which is apparent what Mr. Bill Diss favors. So, does that 3% of people seeking abortions at Planned Parenthood make it a "kill center" or a "gateway to lust?" I seriously doubt it.

I'm glad to read that Charles Wilhoite, the only black guy on the Portland Development Commission has the right idea:

"Education is the answer. Abstinence programs, from what I'm reading, aren't working. Things are getting worse."

Looks like I've got a friend in Portland.
