THIS CHANGES NOTHING

Mar 16, 2012 23:41

but of course now that I officially announced a hiatus, I found a fic on my harddrive which was jst_klo's valentine's day present to me last year.  We didn't post it then due to spoilers, but here's a belated v-day present for you guys!

Kurt knew something was going on the second he woke up. For starters, the house smelled like pancakes, even though it was Monday morning. Nobody in his house actually cooked breakfast unless it was the weekend.
The second sign that something was amiss came as he walked in to the bathroom he shared with Finn. Not only was the entire room cleared of Finn's dirty underwear, but everything had been cleaned to the point that it was sparkling. Frowning, he looked down at his hands, sighing in relief once he saw that they weren't bruised. At least he knew he hadn't been stress-cleaning in his sleep.
Shrugging at what was apparently his step-brother's sudden interest in hygiene, Kurt continued through his morning routine, finally getting dressed and going downstairs. He blinked as he came in to the kitchen and saw that not only had breakfast been made, the table had been decorated with a (surprisingly tasteful) Valentine's Day theme. He turned, about to congratulate Carole on her work when she came in the door, gasping in surprise.
"Kurt, sweetheart, this is lovely!" She said, coming over to him and hugging him. "I don't know what it is about you Hummel men, but you certainly know how to go all out for special occasions." She smiled, pulling her hair back to show him the earrings she had in, a pair of pink hearts that he hadn't seen her wear before. "Look at what your father surprised me with this morning!"
"Well, what can I say? We like taking care of our own..." Kurt smiled, even though his head was starting to spin with how confusing everything was. He had a clean bathroom, a mysteriously made breakfast, and his dad could suddenly afford a pair of earrings that cost more than a fancy dinner at Breadstix? Something wasn't adding up, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it yet.
He looked up as his dad came down the stairs, smiling and hugging him tightly. "Nice work on the earrings," he said softly, patting his dad on the back before pulling away.
Burt looked up to make sure Carole wasn't close enough to hear before leaning in to talk to Kurt softly. "I should be telling you the same, Kid. How'd you know I forgot Valentine's Day? And more important, how'd you afford those earrings? You're not going without a pair of those shoes you like, the Doctor Marts or whatever--"
"Doc Martins, Dad. Doc Martins..." Kurt said, even though that clearly wasn't the point of the conversation.
"Yeah, those...You didn't put off getting a pair of those to keep me outta the doghouse with Carole, did you? 'Cause if so, I can't let you do that. You work in the garage to have money to spend on you, not on your old man."
Kurt blinked at him slightly before shaking his head. "No, no Dad...Don't worry about it. I wanted to help you out. It wouldn't really be a good start to getting married if you forgot your first Valentine's Day, and we never really celebrated it...I kind of knew you would forget..."
Burt smiled, patting Kurt on the shoulder before pulling him in close for another hug. "You're a good kid, Kurt....You worry too much about everybody else, and not enough about you, but it's 'cause you got your mother's big heart."
Kurt smiled, hugging his Dad back for a second before pulling away and pushing him towards the table. "Go, you've got a wife to romance. Breakfast is ready, the table's set, you can even tell Carole that I'll handle making sure Finn gets out of bed and ready for school so that you two have some more time to make googly eyes at each other."
Burt titled his head at him slightly. "You sure? Finn duty is the toughest job in the mornings...You remember that time he bit me, right?"
Kurt shrugged, smiling softly. "I'm sure. It's Valentine's Day. If he bites me, I'll shove a bag full of candy hearts in his mouth."
~~~
Kurt didn't get it. His day was going freakishly well. From the fact that Finn was not only awake (and non-violent) when Kurt had went to get him up in time for school, to the fact that he had (apparently) sent all of the girls in New Directions their favorite flowers (with bonus jewelry for Rachel and Mercedes) and the guys their favorite candy (with Finn getting a bonus Power Ranger action figure) , the day was turning out like some kind of movie.
The only problem in his whole day, in fact, was that he had yet to see or hear from Blaine. He wasn't sure what he had been expecting, he only knew that none of it had happened so far. He hadn't had flowers waiting in his locker, no special lapel pin waiting on his chair in homeroom. Even Anthony had seemed confused by the lack of Blaine in Kurt's day.
"You sure you two aren't fighting, Boss man?" He asked as he followed Kurt out of school at the end of the day. "I mean, me and the Mrs. fight all the time and I never know it. Well, I do when I get home and she's got a gun pointed on me yelling about the dishwasher, but until it gets to that point, I have no clue."
"Trust me, Anthony. Considering I'm the one who'd be pointing the gun and yelling about the dishes in this case, I know we aren't fighting." He shrugged, frowning slightly as he approached his car. "Maybe he forgot it was Valentine's Day. Or, I mean, we never really made plans to do anything for it, it's not like I got him something. I was gonna offer to fix dinner, but that's not anything too out of the ordinary..." He paused as he got even with the door to his car, realizing that he couldn't see in his car. "What the..."
"What's up, Boss man?" Anthony said, automatically getting even with where Kurt was looking, taking a second to look for himself before tilting his head confusedly. "Are those balloons?"
"I do believe so..." Kurt said, opening his door slowly and laughing as some of the balloons escaped and floated away. Seeing something shimmer out of the corner of his eye, he looked down and smiled as he saw a paperweight shaped like the comedy and tragedy masks holding down not only the rest of the balloons, but a piece of paper as well.
Pulling the paper out from under the weight carefully, Kurt unfolded it, smiling widely as he saw Blaine's handwriting. I love that even though you're a diva, you can still goof off and have fun with me when I'm being dorky. Go back to the choir room. -B.
"I can't believe this..." Kurt said, handing Anthony the note to read while he put his bag in the car and shut the door. "I am not wearing the right shoes to go on a scavenger hunt..." Taking the note back, he smiled and started for the choir room.
***
Kurt made his way to the choir room, frowning when he didn't see anyone inside. Walking through the door, he noticed something sitting on the piano and moved to pick it up, smiling as he realized it was a picture of himself, Rachel and Mercedes that Blaine had taken backstage at sectionals. Turning the picture over, Kurt smiled as he found another note, along with an envelope.
I love how much Mercedes and Rachel mean to you, and how far you go to show it. And, even though you'll never admit it, I love how you talk me up around them so that they'll like me more.  Here's an all-expense-paid day at the spa for my favorite Diva and his two fellow Divas.
Speaking of which, every Diva needs to take the stage now and again, right? See you in the auditorium, baby. -B.
Kurt smiled, heading back out of the choir room and down the hall to the auditorium, smiling as he saw the top hat sitting in the middle of the stage. Running up the stairs and across the stage, he knelt down to pick it up. Smiling as a note fell out of it, Kurt put on the hat and started to read.
I love that you have plans that go beyond Lima, Ohio. I love that you want to be in the spotlight, but not if it means losing your individuality. I've got two tickets to New York already booked for Spring Break. Pick what show you want to go see, baby. :)
You know, your locker would be a good place to keep that hat. ;) -B.
Kurt smiled, putting the note in his pocket before heading to his locker. Getting there, he dialed his combination quickly, opening it to find that his locker was exactly as he left it, aside from a note on top of his Physics textbook.
I love that you're kind of ridiculously smart, but you don't rub it in, even when it's something that excites you, like music or fashion. This is an I-O-U: You have an entire day to teach me about anything you want, with no complaints from me.
What're you doing? School ended hours ago, silly. Go home! -B.
Kurt smiled, grabbing the note and adding it to the collection in his pocket before shutting his locker and running out to his car where Anthony was waiting. "Time to head home, see you tomorrow, Anthony" he said, ignoring the bodyguard's raised eyebrow at his top hat. Unlocking the door and getting in, he sat the picture frame, top hat, and balloons off to the side before starting his car and heading home.
As he pulled in to the driveway, he felt his phone vibrate. Pulling it out of his pocket excitedly, he frowned as he saw the text was from Finn and not Blaine like he had been hoping.
thnks again 4 the pwr rngr, bro. totally awesome v-day present! mom said to tell you her and burt are gonna be out late, so we're on our own for dinner. i'm gonna go over to puck's and play video games, so don't worry about me. btw, what's up with your room?
"My room?" Kurt wondered out loud, frowning and getting out of the car quickly. Letting himself in the house, he took the stairs down to the basement two at a time, looking around worriedly as he reached the bottom, only to find that nothing was different.
His dresser looked the same, his vanity mirror was fine, Blaine was sitting on his bed, his shoes were lined up by the door.
"Kurt, stop panicking. Everything's where it's supposed to be," Blaine said, laughing softly as he stood up and walked over to him. "I'm pretty sure I should be insulted by you worrying more about your stuff than being surprised by me being on your bed."
Kurt smiled, shrugging slightly. "I was hoping you'd be here. If you sent me home only to have me rushing back out again, I'd have to smack you for making me waste so much gas."
Blaine smiled, kissing him gently and wrapping his arms around him. "Well then, in that case, nevermind what I was about to say."
"Nope, too late. Spit it out." Kurt said, smiling and poking Blaine's arm playfully. "What is it this time?"
"Fine, since you're so pushy..." Blaine said, rolling his eyes at Kurt jokingly. "What I was going to say was this: I love how much you care about your family, and I love that you do so much for all of them without asking for anything back. I love that you never expect anyone to do anything nice for you, and when they do, you try and pay them back. I love that you're not afraid to tell me when I'm wrong, and that you're my biggest cheerleader when I do something right. I love how cuddly you are when you first wake up, and I love how stubborn you are when you're trying not to fall asleep."
He shrugged, blushing slightly. "I love you, Kurt. Everything and anything about you, and I know you could do better, but for some amazingly ridiculous reason, you picked me to be with, and...I don't know, it sounds stupid when I say it, but...I just wanted to give you a day where everything went right so that you could see how you make me feel just by being around."
Kurt smiled, blinking back tears and cuddling closer to Blaine, wrapping his arms around the shorter boy as tight as he could. "Blaine...Today was amazing...I don't even know what to say, aside from 'Thank you'..."
"You could say 'Yes'..." Blaine said, stepping back slightly and reaching in to his pocket. "It's not the real thing, I was serious about wanting you to pick it out...And, I know, this isn't exactly 'going slow', but...I want to marry you, Kurt. And I want everyone to know that you're spoken for, even if we don't get married for ten years..." He smiled, pulling out a ring and holding it up for Kurt to see before getting down on one knee. "Kurt Elizabeth Hummel...Will you, eventually, marry me?"
Kurt smiled, feeling himself start to cry as he nodded. "Yes...I will, eventually, marry you, Blaine. Even if you are the cheesiest sap known to man-kind." He adding, laughing and sniffling as Blaine slid the ring on his finger.
"You know what this means, right?" Blaine said as he stood up and wrapped his arms around Kurt's waist happily. "Us making it official, and whatnot?"
"That Rachel's going to make us sit down for another uncomfortable talk with her two dads? That Mercedes is going to start putting together a medley of every Whitney Houston love song she knows? That your mother is going to start hounding me about china patterns?" He gasped, his eyes lighting up excitedly, "That we can have sex without the long, extended negotiations and teasing currently necessary to convince you that really sex and wooing go together like coffee and chocolate?"
"Well, all of that, really," Blaine said, "and don't think I didn't notice what you just said.  I *knew* you were doing it on purpose, you little tease. But I was thinking more along the lines of "I was right.""
"Right how? Also, if we knock over a lamp because you feel the need to play Fred Astaire, you're not getting a "We Just Got Engaged" blowjob..."
Blaine smiled, pulling Kurt closer and whispering in his ear, "Every February, you'll be my Valentine...."
***
Kurt was still giddy with delight.  As Blaine danced him around the room, Kurt kept looking at the ring again.  Suddenly, a thought struck him, and Kurt pulled away from Blaine, ignoring the music.
"Kurt?" Blaine asked.  He looked confused, and maybe a little hurt.  Kurt ignored it.
"Am I the girl in this relationship?" Kurt demanded.
Blaine blinked in surprise.  "What?"
"You got me an *engagement* ring, Blaine."
"Well, yes, but--"
"So *I'm* the girl."
"I really don't think we need to apply heteronormative labels to our relationship--"
"But you think I'm the girl."
"No!  Kurt, I --"
"Otherwise," Kurt said, crossing his arms, "We'd *both* have engagement rings."
Blaine looked a little embarrassed.  Pulling out a chain from around his neck, he mumbled something about a matched set and not wanting to presume.
Kurt stared at the ring Blaine'd been wearing as a necklace.  It was an exact duplicate of the one Kurt now wore.  *didn't want to presume*... Kurt unclasped the chain and pulled the ring off.  "Idiot," he said, but his tone was fond as he put the ring on Blaine.  "As if I would say no."
