Canon point: Endgame, a year since the fall of Nox Obscurus.
Personality: Edge’s motto is “Keep moving forward no matter what”. He has lived his entire life driven by dreams and high aspirations revolving around humanity’s new foray into their solar system and beyond. Edge is relatively friendly and easy to talk to; the kind of person who draws others in. His charisma is something that he himself often seems blissfully unaware of, and would just as soon deny it as he would accept it as the reason that he collects new party members everywhere he goes.
Captain Maverick is independent and headstrong. He believes in personal improvement by one’s own hand and often refers to this process as ‘evolution’. He’s also a rather upstanding member of the SRF, and as the Universe’s situation becomes more complicated, is distressed at the idea of disobeying his overall orders. This often happens when he finds himself on a foreign planet and sees someone in trouble. Edge’s kindness and passion for people is something that inevitably nearly undoes him. Upon being transported to an alternate reality Earth in the 1950s, he is convinced to relinquish the Exalithium Crystal that powers their warp drive to some researchers-the reactor it is incorporated into then proceeds to completely obliterate that Earth and create a black hole. The party only barely escapes unscathed, and Edge’s mental state becomes broken beyond compare.
As a result, he becomes bitter and sometimes even outwardly cruel. For a good chunk of the next section of the game, Edge starts to refuse to get involved with the locals on the underdeveloped planets, even to the point of abandoning people in need. This is mentally painful for him, but he believes he is doing his best. It’s only after rescuing the Featherfolk Sarah Jerand, and meeting the clairvoyant Lady Eleyna that he starts to piece himself back together: He realizes that the Universe needs him, and that there are ‘some things that only certain people can do’. Edge throws himself head first into a conflict against an enemy that can destroy and eradicate entire worlds-making Earth’s technology look like child’s play in the process-and presses forward even though he knows that the chance of victory is slim to none. Even faced with fighting his close friend possessed by the Grigori, Edge knows he has to fight through anything-because his crew and his Universe need him. In their final face off, Edge states that he’s going to defeat Faize-as his friend. In the end, as Nox Obscurus collapses, Edge rushes to Faize’s side and lifts him up. They walk together, attempting to escape the crumbling planet despite the Eldarian’s incapacitated state. All the while, Edge tells Faize that he’s just glad that he’s okay-that they can go back together. Almost to the escape point, Faize slips and falls as the floor beneath them crumbles. The Captain refuses to let go, and in the end, Faize yanks his hand free. He falls into the abyss, and Edge stands up slowly, waving his friends on to leave him behind despite the fact that Reimi is screaming for him. His grief in that moment was simply too much for him to handle. He knows little in the way of selfishness, and no price is too high to pay for a friend or a friend of a friend. Long story short, the Captain of the Calnus is kind to a fault and willing to sacrifice anything for a chance for humanity to keep moving forward.
Powers/Abilities: Edge is, at first glance a normal human. However, the Captain of the SRF-003 Calnus is imbued with altered genetics. Written into the very core of his being and DNA (what is actually coding), is a type of Symbology that allows him to increase his strength, speed, and stamina when under great pressure. This ability spreads to allies as well, giving them a sense of ‘warmth’ that encourages them to keep fighting. He is one of three surviving ‘Seeds of Hope’, humans that were experimented on by the government in order to try to make a super race that could survive the radiation poisoning that has made most of Earth uninhabitable.
The genetic symbols written into his DNA make him the only human capable of using Symbology, the equivalent of their universe’s magic. His skills are limited to powerful healing magic and holy spells, such as Radiant Lancer, which he uses to summon spikes of light energy to impale his foes. Beyond that, he is skilled with a sword and largely prefers them to guns because of his innate ability to perceive his enemy’s movements instantly. This made it impossible for him to land a hit with a gun, as he would always shoot at where his enemy would be rather than where it was. It makes his abilities with the sword rather impressive, however.
