So, as a lot of you know, I make mixes -- soundtrack, time capsules of my life, songs to match particular activities ... and when I've got the time to do them properly, theme mixes. And a couple recent musical acquisitions led me to this idea: I'd really love to try to compile as many contemporary war songs and protest songs as possible. I'm talking about songs written and recorded after September 11th about the so-called "war on terror," the U.S.'s thoroughly questionable invasion of Iraq, the erosion of democracy and civil liberties in the name of security, the way media coverage of global conflict contributes to a culture of fear ...
Here's what I have so far. If you've got any suggestions (for new tracks, or alternate tracks by artists on the list), please chime in, and I'll update the list as you do. Uploads are nice but not necessary; I can track things down myself later on. No genre restrictions apply.
Sleater-Kinney-- Combat Rock
The Black Angels-- The First Vietnam War
Radiohead-- 2+2=5
Elbow-- Leaders of the Free World
The Decemberists-- Sixteen Military Wives
Herbert-- The Movers and the Shakers (he's got about four other songs that fit the bill, too)
Pink-- Dear Mr. President
Melissa Etheridge-- The Kingdom of Heaven
The Faint-- Paranoiattack
