For those of you who've talked to me about my studies in college or have been following this journal for a while, you'll know that I have some
pretty passionate views about the treatment intersex individuals receive at the hands of modern medicine.
So imagine my pleasure that instead of another rant, I can offer you a link to an incredibly open-minded and thorough article in the New York Times on
Cheryl Chase, the questionable reasoning behind surgery on intersex infants, and a landmark consensus statement recently published in Pediatrics recommending that physicians consider the whole range of sex-linked physical factors in assigning gender to an intersex infant and discourage parents from rushing into surgery. Go read it. It's heartening to see that progress is being made.
